The City of Goleta is conducting a brief traffic data collection effort along Hollister Avenue in western Goleta this week.

As part of this work, temporary cameras have been installed at select intersections along Hollister Avenue between Storke Road and Cathedral Oaks Road.

These cameras are used solely to count vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians in order to better understand how people currently travel through the corridor. The cameras are temporary and are mounted on existing street lights, traffic signs, or traffic signals. No permanent equipment is being installed.

The information collected will focus on understanding current and future traffic conditions, accommodating planned development in western Goleta, and identifying opportunities to improve safety and mobility for everyone who uses the corridor.

Several nearby intersections have already been evaluated through previous data collection efforts, and this will help complete the overall picture.

The City appreciates the community’s cooperation.

  1. FernaldPoint: There are a LOT of homes that are in the planning stages for the west end of Goleta. The area is ripe for development. It will be much easier to build now than in the past because there is such a huge shortage of housing in Goleta. The Sandpiper Golf Course is prime real estate and at some point will get built out. I’d hate to see it covered in housing, but simply look at the shrinking amount of available land to build on in that area. It’s just a matter of time before the lemon and avocado trees make way for multi-story condos, apartments, townhouses, etc. We will all know when the plan is completely set when they finally build out County Fire Station #10 (Hollister/Winchester)

    • It is questionable, although generally unquestioned by the powers that be, whether CA needs more housing at all. If the population is declining and we have been building condos and apartments and allowing second housing on R1 lots, etc., why is there a shortage at all?
As before, I suggest we look at the amount of residential housing that is being used for 2d plus homes by the wealthy, look at the amount of housing that is being controlled by hedge funds and others who use it as vacation rental for tourists. We should heavily tax single family housing not used by the owners as housing for them or demonstrably used for long term leases to real people occupants, for example.

      • I agree with you.
But whether the population of california is going up or down doesn’t matter in this area.
When you have the best climate in the nation, there will always be a housing shortage because there is an endless supply of people that want to live here. And an awful lot of wealthy folks that would like to own a home here and live in it very rarely. I got tired of saying this a long time ago but people still believe building will lower prices. No matter how many houses you build, the prices will still be high in Goleta and SB.
