Two teenagers were rescued by Santa Barbara County Fire Department water units after being carried by the tide near Haskell's Beach on Sunday.

At 4:28 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to a water rescue call near Haskell's beach. They discovered two 14-year-old females were stranded approximately one mile west on a cliff due to the rising tide.

Fire crews dispatched jetskis with rescue swimmers to make contact with the teens as they were brought back to shore.

The teens declined treatment at the scene with the consent of one of their mother's.

Better safe than sorry with water rescues. The section of beach these girls were on (assumption based from a lifetime of enjoying Haskell’s / vague description given in post) gets blocked off on high tide- forcing them to swim through the surf that is littered with large submerged rocks as well as the peir on the west end of the beach. I’m sure the guys on the ski would agree that this “rescue” was the best part of their week too! Total win-win. As said by others, the rescuers get paid no matter what- be happy when your “taxpayer dollars” are actually being used to help others.

Methinks the Station 11 Water-Rescue crew were quite pleased to suit up and go out on a hot day for a minor emergency. Costs of the mission probably didn't exceed $10. They get paid whether they rescue kids or not. They'd rather do that than some training drill in turnout suits and 100-degree weather.

Entitled? To what? They were caught in a rip tide and stranded near the cliffs from what I heard. Yes, we ALL are "entitled" to emergency services that our taxes pay for.

wow....who peed in your cheerios this morning? it's not staged, the girls were trapped when the tide came in...pretty common when you don't know the geography locally and the tide table... i don't see the kids smiling, i just think you're cranky...get some coffee and lighten up a bit

How are these kids a "drain on our society?" They got in trouble and were rescued. That's what our taxes are for. If you think they should have been left to possibly drown, then I think it's pretty clear who the "drain" on our society is - people like YOU.
