Teenager Rescued from Douglas Preserve Cliff

Update by edhat staff

A teenage girl was rescued from the side of a cliff on the Douglas Preserve Thursday evening.

Santa Barbara City firefighters and Search & Rescue teams responded to the scene around 6:30 p.m. The teen was reportedly clinging to the side of the cliff in a remote area, approximately 150 feet down. She was reportedly stuck down slope from the trails.

Crews used a rope system where a rescuer was lowered down to reach the teen. She was placed in a victim harness and raised back up to safety. She was transported to the hospital with some minor injuries.

First call-out was for a fall victim, then a cliff rescue. This is near the Douglas Family Preserve, at Medcliff Road and Selrose Lane.

  1. It’s the “cool” thing to do. You and your underage hookup or pals all sit right at the cliff’s edge. You smoke pot and/or drink beer and just hang out 100’ or so above the beach. I have seen these silly kids climb the fences at Shoreline Park, so they can be rebels, even after heavy rains, and perch on the cliff edge high above the beach. I have seen them hanging out on the cliffs at The Wilcox and I.V. beach and Ellwood Beach. Living Life on the edge, as it were. This bizarre and stupid “fun thing to do” seems more prevalent with each passing year. Maybe this teenage girl was playing Mountain goat with her friends.

  2. “he who is innocent can cast the first stone”. athough I would love to finger wag and blame the kids! we have no clue what happened here. they could have tripped, could have stumbled, could have been bumped by an off leash dog. there is no reason to rant about kids and what they do. cause we all did it and it will continue for a long time. glad the girls ok, next time she will rethink how close to get to the edge.
