The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Via Senda and Modoc Road on Tuesday around 12:30 p.m.
The incident, which occurred just east of Via Senda, necessitated the closure of both eastbound and westbound lanes along Modoc Road.
CHP reports a 19-year-old male from Goleta was driving a 2011 GMC Terrain eastbound on Modoc Road when he crossed the double solid yellow lines into the westbound lane.
The GMC first collided head-on with a 2023 Audi A4, driven by an 87-year-old woman from Goleta, and then struck the side of a 1998 Toyota Camry driven by a 49-year-old woman from Mariposa. The GMC overturned and came to rest against a raised concrete barrier.
The woman from Goleta sustained major injuries and was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The woman from Mariposa declined medical transport after being evaluated at the scene.
The driver of the GMC sustained critical injuries, and despite life-saving efforts by emergency personnel, he was later pronounced deceased at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
At this time, it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in this incident.
Anyone with information regarding this crash is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol – Santa Barbara Area at (805) 770-4800.
In a separate incident, the CHP reported a three-vehicle crash on State Route 154, west of San Antonio Creek Road. This collision has resulted in blocked eastbound lanes. Officers were quick to respond, and efforts to manage the scene and reroute traffic are underway.
The causes of both crashes are currently under investigation by the CHP.

This is so sad.
Drifting over the lines also sounds like texting while driving. DO NOT TEXT and DRIVE!!
Wtf happened? Did the GMC blow the stop sign/pass those waiting at the stop sign? Such a strange location for a fatal accident. So very sad.
Damn, that sucks. ? Condolences to his family.
The Terrain is a substantial SUV. Wonder if he was buckled up?
No matter what the circumstances, this is a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to those who knew and loved this young man. I hope the octagenarian female is suffering as little as possible and will be able to recover from her injuries.
