Target to Take Over Kmart Location?

By an edhat reader
Are the rumors true? Will Target really take over the Kmart in Goleta? The lease for the building at 6865 Hollister Ave has been up for a little while and earlier edhat reported that Sears Holdings would be closing down many of their Kmart and Sears stores, although Goleta was not named at that time. Perhaps Kmart is letting their lease expire?
Allegedly Target has already filed papers with the City to remodel the building.
What do edhat readers think about this?

Jun 12, 2018 03:12 AMTarget is moving in to the old Galleria Building on the corner of La Cumbre Rd.
They are remodeling the Interior space. I see some work being done but not much.

Jun 12, 2018 07:41 AMI'd be happy with just the Galleria store if they support "pickup in store". Use it like an Amazon Locker.

Jun 12, 2018 08:02 AMThe traffic is already a disaster in that area. I can't imagine what this change would do. The 'build everything' mentality of the Goleta City Council has come home to roost. I'd love to see a Target there but the resulting gridlock will keep me away.

Jun 12, 2018 08:33 AMTargets everywhere open at 8am. If you want to avoid traffic, go early. Have breakfast at Cajun Kitchen, then walk over to Target. I'm happy, because I won't have to drive to Target in Ventura anymore, and will keep my dollars local. Target pays $11 hour, in case you want to apply.

Jun 12, 2018 08:40 AMIf Target is moving to the Galleria, why would they also open up at Kmart? Sadly, I think we're stuck with Kmart for now and will be "blessed" with a mini Target at one of the already most busy intersections in town. Traffic will be insane, but hey.... we'll have a Target!

Jun 12, 2018 08:45 AMSpeaking of Target, according to Target's Corporate website. They pushed back the opening of the La Cumbre store to 2019.

Jun 12, 2018 09:09 AMI wish Target would move where KMart is, having a Target where the Galleria is with such limited parking seems like a really daft idea

Jun 12, 2018 09:46 AMCant be worse than the La Cumbre location, right? And this will be a full sized one, so it would be worth the struggle IMHO.

Jun 12, 2018 09:22 AMThis has been planned for months and it's happening. We'll get a lot more details soon since the non-disclosures are no longer enforced for those in the know. The city planners, developers, and commercial real estate agents, and landlords were pretty good about keeping it quiet for so long.

Jun 12, 2018 09:39 AMRumors are true! Goleta City Councilmember Roger Aceves confirmed that Target submitted papers to the City with their plans to remodel. Now it lies in the City of Goleta's hands to not mess this up for the locals, like they did last time.

Jun 12, 2018 10:30 AMIs this a serious question? I know there are people here that live in a bubble, but if this is a legit question, than it's a whole new level of isolation.

Jun 14, 2018 06:41 AMReally? Maybe the question about a membership fee is from a nonconsumer and/or from someone who drives as little as possible to help the environment. Someone who buys things made only in the USA. That describes me, for example.

Jun 12, 2018 10:36 AMBrilliant forward thinking by the folks at Target. The 5 Points location will attract the higher end customer, and the Kmart location will do "gangbusters" due to the demographics of that area. Both locations will bring much needed jobs and tax dollars, and we get the benefit of quality products at reasonable prices. Traffic? Deal with it or take public transport. Parking? Deal with it or take public transportation.

Jun 12, 2018 10:51 AMWhat is it about the "demographics of that area" leads you to believe the customers would be any different from the 5 Points location? "Gangbusters?" Come on, really? Also... public transport gets stuck in traffic too. JEEZ.... out of touch much?

I hit up Kmart on my lunch break. If I needed something at Target, I'd prob do the same instead of dealing with parking at 5 pts area.

Jun 12, 2018 12:46 PMTo the person offended by the term "gangbusters." You seem to be unclear what this term means. Here you go... Gangbuster: very successful, especially commercially. modifier noun: gangbuster
"the restaurant did a gangbuster business"

Jun 12, 2018 01:57 PM"Demographics of that area" = college kids. They're what's been keeping Kmart in business.

-
Jun 12, 2018 02:00 PMSBSURFERLIFE - then why didn't you say that in the first place? When you call one set of customers from the SB area "higher end" and then refer to the customers at the Kmart location being of a different "demographic," it sounds a little snobby, don't you think?

Jun 12, 2018 03:09 PMThat's how I interpreted that person's demographic comment. Snobby, sure. Bigoted, I didn't think so but that's up for interpretation. No need to get this upset about it. Personally I don't enjoy fighting for shopping carts with hoards of 19 year-olds buying microwaves, but I guess I'm snobby that way.

Jun 12, 2018 03:19 PMSBSURFERLIFE - so you didn't write that? So, how can you defend an admittedly "snobby" comment without knowing what meaning the key word was intended to convey? This is what irritates me - people ingorantly defending snobby and likely bigoted comments without question.

Jun 12, 2018 11:07 AMSome of these comments are quite telling about the bubble in which most of the area's residents live. Veiled bigotry ("demographics" in Goleta vs SB) gets upvotes?

Jun 12, 2018 02:16 PMI’d be surprised if Target built before 3-5 years. That is the most profitable Kmart in the country. It’s supposed to be the last to close because all the freight from the rest of the stores closing will be sent/sold their. Maybe Target paid a huge amount for the property and it’ll be gone sooner than planned. I’m curios to hear a planned opening date.

Jun 12, 2018 04:20 PMI really hope that all those complaining about the traffic, would stay/will stay out of Goleta. I don't like downtown so guess what, I stay the hell away and don't complain about what's going on over there because I don't care and it doesn't affect me. I've lived in that area most of my life, have seen the changes from the old dirt lot that became Linens & Things, Costco and so. And guess what I deal with it, and if I complain its because I can, I live here. Most the people complaining on here about Goleta don't even live here and to the rest that do well... I feel your pain!

Jun 12, 2018 05:26 PMMaybe I didn’t see this answer in the other comments but are they going to continue with the galleria location as well? I don’t see the need for two targets within 12 miles of each other. Either way I’m happy for Kmart to stay or Target to enter..still would rather have it be a Walmart lol!!

Jun 12, 2018 05:44 PMyes they will be doing BOTH locations if this proposal goes through.
regardless of distance, the business model for target and any other large chain is to flood the market with only themselves to get EVERY purchase. why do we have 30 startbucks coffee houses on state street all within blocks of each other? is it different coffee? different scones?
nope its to blanket the market to get all the sales.

Jun 14, 2018 04:05 AMMy understanding is the Goleta K-Mart is one of the most profitable K-Mart stores in the country. If that's true, I would doubt they have any plans to vacate.
