A Santa Maria man wielding a knife in the 500 block of State Street was arrested by Santa Barbara Police on Sunday evening.

Officers arrived on the scene around 10:50 p.m. after witnesses called 9-1-1 about a suspect walking around with a large kitchen knife making verbal threats.

The suspect was located near State and Haley Streets and still had the knife in his hand when contacted by police, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

"Officers gave verbal orders for the subject to drop the knife. Subject refused and advanced towards Officers with the knife in hand. Officers were able to deescalate the situation safely by continually giving clear verbal orders. Subject dropped the knife and complied with Officers," according to a statement by the Police Department.

The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Tudor Ortiz from Santa Maria. He was arrested without further incident and determined to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

Ortiz was booked in the Santa Barbara County Jail on a $10,000 bail and charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance (misdemeanor), possession of methamphetamine (misdemeanor), and possession of a fixed blade knife over 3 inches (misdemeanor).

I didn’t realize it was illegal to possess a fixed blade knife over 3 inches. It must be tricky for all the chefs and butchers in town to go to work knowing they could get busted at any moment

It's not made up, there's two cases recently reported. Here are the names, you can search for news on them:

"LOVELAND, Colo. — An excessive force lawsuit was filed against the Loveland Police Department in connection with a June 2020 arrest of a 73-year-old woman with dementia. Civil rights attorney Sarah Schielke, of The Life & Liberty Law Office, filed the lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of Karen Garner."

"Law enforcement officers in Rowan County pulled a 66-year-old librarian from her car by her hair, threw her to the ground and tore her rotator cuff during a 2019 traffic stop, a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday alleges.
The woman, Stephanie Bottom of Atlanta, said she was driving to a funeral and posing no threat to the officers when they stopped her on Interstate 85 for driving 80 mph in a 70 mph zone and failing to heed blue lights. Once officers stopped her car, they approached her with guns drawn, she said.
Bottom, who is Black, contended in the lawsuit that the officers from the Salisbury Police Department and Rowan County Sheriff’s office used excessive force, in violation of the U.S. Constitution. The suit was filed in federal court in the Middle District of North Carolina."

Or beating up an elderly woman then laughing about her bones popping as they break her shoulder and arm..Is that bad mouthing the police when they beat up senior citizens? That might be acceptable to some but NOT to me. I agree not all cops are bad but most of them cover for the bad ones.

HADO - this may come as a surprise to many, but I agree with you. Not all cops are bad. I've met some amazing, helpful and considerate law enforcement officers in my time. I also agree deadly force is sometimes necessary. I do think they need to limit that though, as we see in the Andrew Brown, Jr. case, fleeing the police without posing an immediate deadly threat (ie, not running away with a bomb) should NOT be cause for deadly force. In fact, the US Supreme Court has established this. Anyway, no, A.C.A.B. is wrong. It should be M.C.A.B. (many cops.....).

Jeff, I hate this term bootlicker. Just cause I support the police and what they do to keep us safe doesn't mean I'm some kind of authority loving fascist. Do I think all cops are great? No, some are racist assholes who need to be put away. Do I think all cops are bad? Also no. Geez, it's crazy the echo chamber the acab types live in. Get out and see the sunshine for once!

6:57 - Why would it be unnecessary to kill a guy if he came after you with a deadly weapon? I'd like to know what you would do in such a situation?

6:57, When a deranged meth addict is approaching you while wielding a knife, de escalating the situation safely is a pretty admirable feat. Go take your anti-cop bs somewhere else, preferably up someplace uncomfortable. Thanks!

Not a good combination - under the influence, meth and a fixed long blade. This could have ended badly...kudos to the police for deescalating the situation.
