A Goleta man has been taken into custody following a lengthy standoff.
On Saturday, August 31, 2024, at approximately 8:33 am, deputies responded to Buena Tierra housing in the 6000-block of Hollister Avenue for a report of an assault that had just occurred. When deputies arrived, they contacted an adult male victim with serious injuries. Â The victim was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive.
Deputies learned that the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Adam Unmuth, had returned to the balcony near his room on the third floor. Deputies attempted to contact Unmuth who was agitated, non-compliant and armed with a knife.
Deputies evacuated the building while they continued to try to convince Unmuth to surrender. Allied agencies responded to assist with traffic control and fire and medics were staged.
The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Team and Crisis Negotiations Team arrived and contained the scene for several hours while deputies authored an arrest warrant. The warrant was approved at approximately 10:54 am.
Deputies attempted to get Unmuth to surrender with the use of a Sheriff’s K9, kinetic projectile and chemical agents.
At approximately 12:54, deputies forced entry into the room and took Unmuth into custody. Â He was transported to an area hospital for medical attention. Â He will later be booked into jail after medical clearance. Â Booking charges and bail amount are pending.
As serious as the charges are, I’m sure he’ll be released on his OR after serving just a couple days in county jail.
The question is: Is he losing that brand new apt he had all to himself for free and back on the streets?
I’m very familiar with Adam. I’ve witnessed multiple run-ins he’s had with police. He was banned where we slept for violent behavior.
If he cut someone up I sure hope he gets put away for a long time. It sounds like he’s got a record already.
Wow, this IS a shocker. Hopefully no one blames the cops for something they didn’t handle “just so†dealing with this clown. Heavy costs.
Why blame the cops? Sounds like they did a great job de-escalating the situation.
All you do is try to stir stuff up here. Give it a rest.
Blaming the cops?? Fake news. I’m on their side, you’re not. What a clown!
Who couldn’t see something like this happening at this NEW transitional convict/homeless/vagrant housing element… The Sheriff will need to make a pre-plan for responding to future incidents at this site.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
Two weeks after the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The Sheriff’s Dept. should have done a much better job of traffic control. For everyone leaving the airport you have to drive on Fairview because of the construction work. Heading towards Hollister I passed a number of officers and medical folks standing in the parking lot at the Yardi campus, and there should have been someone there blocking Fairview traffic and telling everyone to head east on the side street (Carson Street). Instead the parade of cars from the airport didn’t know what was ahead of them until getting closer to Hollister, where there was a simply yellow tape blocking the road. Cars were piling up there and trying to make uturns. A real mess.
Felon taking on Sheriff’s in a standdown – you get traffic dude. Deal with it.
That neighborhood is under siege with the new single lanes, the roundabout nightmare and now this. I don’t like to even go there these days.
If you build it, they will come….
Why don’t the police employ their full length shields when confronting armed suspects?
Having worked in old town for many years the one lane is a mistake and this project is a mistake so i won’t go there anymore
TINKER- so you’re going to boycott local businesses there because you don’t like the striping and homeless housing those business owners chose to put there? Think carefully.
not a boycott I supported these businesses fir many years just not worth it to go there now due to city decisions. I’m concerned how people may get out in an emergency with the one lane.
How does the housing project keep you from shopping/dining, etc?
You see, my point is that the local businesses there shouldn’t intentionally be made to suffer because you don’t like the city’s decisions. That’s what I’m getting at. Hopefully you don’t really do that. Those are real local shops.
Its a risk vs reward decision for me. Shopping in oldtown is no longer worth the aggravation or increased risk of having a fender bender. It was not a easy decision, I have shopped Santa Cruz for our meats and produce for 30 years
SAIL – is it really that bad? I’ve driven through there a few times and yeah, it looks weird but I never really felt worried.
Either way, it’s clear that many are upset about this. I just hope people aren’t really going to avoid patronizing businesses there because of the striping.
If driving makes you fearful, perhaps you should stop.
Not fearful of driving. As I said its a Risk-Reward. Unnecessarily inserting’s yourself into a higher risk environment is not wise. Going to Albertsons or Sprouts is easy. But this is a conversation for another thread. We are here to find out about the situation at Buena Tierra.
Ah, so then your fear is not of a fender bender.
Let’s give the druggies and criminals a nice new housing complex in downtown Goleta! Yay look what we did! Oh shoot, police activity…shocker. Dem Dystopia.
