I was in Goleta yesterday late in the day at the beach when a shower started, rain + a bit of graupel (smooshed together snow flakes) turning quickly to peppercorn-sized hail. It was cold!

Don't foxtail agaves (aka swan's neck or lion's tail) have a unique drama? Native to Mexico, I watch for their flowering every year, a harbinger of our winter. Looking closely at the curved tail, one can see hundreds of lovely yellow-green flowers, greatly loved by bees, start to bloom from the base, moving out to the end. This magnificent drama requires so much of the plant's energy that it dies - but new agaves grow from the base.

Can someone kindly ID the first plant? Have lived here over twenty years, and they're fantastic.

You're welcome. According to their wikipedia page, one interesting tidbit seems to be that they are actually quite rare in the wilds of Mexico (they come from higher elevations), which is funny because they proliferate nearly everywhere else in the world that they are placed! They sure do like SB.
