Summer Visitors

Favorite visitors this Summer? Maybe you're lucky enough to have them coming from far and wide despite covid, fires and drought? We're happy to have favorites who live nearby and visit often, but everyone else seems to be hunkered down. So maybe it's due to fewer visitors that we've noticed more like these. Do you have favorites in this batch, who maybe have visited your house too?

Aug 27, 2021 07:39 PMI haven’t seen the brilliantly yellow hooded orioles in a few weeks now, but saw a group of quails yesterday. It’s coming up to about a few weeks from now last year I started seeing the orange beaked hummingbirds. Saw some deer grazing on Monday.

Aug 27, 2021 12:32 PMTwo favorite summer visitors to our garden (if we can only pick one or two): Male Black-headed grosbeaks and male Spotted towhees. Just saw a small Checkerspot butterfly (about an hour ago) and that made my day. Have never before seen one of those in our garden. This week we've seen a few Alfalfa butterflies, with a lot of orange tint to them. Counted 7 Chipmunks out in the back yard this morning . A few days a go wondered where the Sharp-shinned hawks were and then spotted one the very next day. An extremely gorgeous male Hooded oriole came to the back yard bird bath (a first). Crazy amount of Spice finches and Squirrels, too, but the Cottontails seem to have moved on.

Aug 27, 2021 11:50 AMI believe that the bird on lavender (picture #1) is orange-crowned warbler. I'm an amateur at this, so any more knowledgeable, feel free to correct.

Aug 27, 2021 11:33 AMWhat type of bird is that? I see them all over and have always wondered.

Aug 28, 2021 09:24 AMThe beak is too thick to be a warbler. The lesser gold finch is probably the correct id.

Aug 27, 2021 11:26 AMThanks for adding your pic too, Rick. Cool to see a chipmunk. I'd been thinking we didn't have them here, not having seen one for years. But lately I've seen a few.

Aug 27, 2021 11:28 AMCan you name visitor#1? Haven't seen him lately, so I guess a migrant species?
