Solstice is Making Waves
Summer Solstice Celebration has officially announced that “WAVE” is the theme for the 2026 Solstice Parade, revealed during First Thursday at the Downtown Santa Barbara Public Library. The announcement also opens the door for artists to begin preparing for the annual Solstice Poster Arts Contest, where the winning design will receive an honorarium and be featured on the Solstice website, across social media, and in promotional materials.
A Wave of Community Inspiration
Over the past six weeks, more than one hundred community members submitted theme ideas at live events and online. The Solstice Theme Committee—made up of Board members, Advisory Board members, and community representatives—reviewed the submissions and narrowed them to the top seven. Final contenders included “Groovy Galaxy,” “Cosmic Garden,” and “Splish Splash.”
Endless Creative Possibilities
Executive Director Penny Little shared her excitement about the theme’s wide-open potential:
“There are so many possibilities—it could be surf waves, light waves, sound waves, a heat wave, a wave of people in a stadium, a microwave, a hair wave, a wave of change, or a wave of emotion. It’s completely up to your imagination!”
Artistic Director Riccardo Morrison added a historical reflection:
“Waving has been an archetypical component of parades for a long time—from the waving of flags and banners to the waving of hands by spectators and participants.”
While the documented history of hand-waving may date back to the 18th century, scholars note that the true origins of gesture greetings are likely far older, though not preserved in the archaeological record.
Calling All Artists: Poster Contest Opens Early 2026
Whatever your interpretation of “WAVE,” Solstice invites artists to start dreaming now. Early in 2026, artists can make their submissions for the 2026 Solstice Poster Arts Contest, welcoming poster designs, T-shirt concepts, and other creative interpretations of the theme.
Announcement Made During BIGGEST Little Elephant Parade Preview
The theme reveal took place during Solstice’s First Thursday reception, which also featured a preview of the upcoming BIGGEST Little Elephant Parade—a new community art initiative. The preview will be on display at the Faulkner Gallery at the Public Library through the month of November. MORE INFO: https://www.solsticeparade.
