The Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture (www.sbac.ca.gov) is pleased to announce “Student Voices from the Santa Barbara City College Art Department,” a new exhibition at Santa Barbara City Hall showcasing top examples of current SBCC student artwork.

Produced in partnership with the City of Santa Barbara, SBCC Atkinson Gallery and the Foundation for Santa Barbara City College, the exhibition is now on view at 735 Anacapa Street in Santa Barbara. An opening reception featuring remarks from participating students will be held during the 1st Thursday Art Walk from 5-7 p.m. on Thurs., March 5.

Santa Barbara Mayor Cathy Murillo deemed the exhibition “a celebration of our city’s talented next generation of artists and leaders.”

The exhibition highlights a wide range of media including works on paper, painting, sculpture and ceramics. Selected by the Art Department’s full-time faculty and the Atkinson Gallery Director in advance of the annual student exhibition, the show’s diversity offers an important glimpse into the Art Department’s activities and teaching methods.

SBCC Atkinson Gallery Director John Connelly shared, “I am delighted to have our students’ artwork on display at City Hall, giving our local community an opportunity to see the physical results of our first-rate art program, while offering a peek behind the process of art education and the meditations of emergent creative minds. This exhibition has been a thoroughly rewarding and inspiring dialogue between art, education and civic engagement.”

With this collaboration, SBCC art students have the opportunity to share their output and learning in an exciting way with a public intersection of art, education and government.
