The Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of San Marcos High School Administrators have identified the student believed responsible for igniting a firework on campus on March 12, 2018. The crime was committed during a time when there was a heightened sense of fear following recent threats of a school shooting on campus. The student was identified following the review of surveillance video of the incident and information gathered from students. The identity of the student is being withheld because he is a juvenile.

The Sheriff’s Office is submitting the case to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office for review with the recommended charges of possession of a firework and the discharge of a firework in a manner to cause chaos. The student also faces additional school disciplinary consequences pursuant to Santa Barbara Unified School District Board Policy and California Education Code.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to thank San Mar cos High School Administrators for their assistance during this investigation, which was instrumental in our ability to quickly identify and locate the suspect.

The Sheriff’s Office also wants to take this opportunity to point out that pranks such as this one not only require a large amount of resources to ensure the safety of the campus and the students, but also put the safety of first responders and the public at risk as they respond to these perceived emergencies.

Update by Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office
9:00 p.m., March 12, 2018

Just after noon today March 12, 2018, at the end of the lunch period, deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol and UCSB Police Department responded to a report of possible shots fired near a classroom at San Marcos High School. Once on scene, deputies initiated an immediate school lockdown and guided other students into nearby classrooms and the gymnasium. A systematic sweep and search of the school campus was conducted and the source of the noises heard was quickly determined to be a firework ignited in the quad area. The lockdown was subsequently lifted.

Sheriff’s deputies are working closely with San Marcos High School Administrators and the Santa Barbara Unified School District to identify the suspect(s) in this case. The Sheriff’s Office has several persons of interest and continues to investigate. The Sheriff’s Office requests anyone with information regarding this case to contact call 805-683-2724 or to leave an anonymous tip, please call 805-681-4171 or go to https://www.sbsheriff.org/home/anonymous-tip/.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind students and the public that placing, throwing or igniting fireworks is illegal pursuant to 12680(a) of the Health and Safety Code. In addition to school disciplinary measures, conviction can lead to fines and/or imprisonment in the County jail.

  1. I didn’t jump to an “extreme conclusion” at all. I simply expressed hope that it wasn’t a bad situation, given all the similar circumstances and the recent threats. If that was too “extreme” for you, I do apologize.

  2. If ever there is a shooting at SMHS, please don’t post comments if you are argumentative, overly upset and angry, too panicky, or otherwise a troll. It is imperative that we provide good information. When, several years ago, there was thought to be a gun on campus (but probably wasn’t), I found the parents to be mostly very calm, just simply trying to get accurate information, and get to their kids. I’m in a nearby neighborhood and was able to post real time information. Please, Ducky, and other bomb throwers, give this one topic a pass. Let the adults handle it, and be helpful and reassuring to reasonably worried parents and grandparents. SMHS parents, we are here for you at Edhat.

  3. DUCKY – what are you talking about? Why are you still stuck on the video? That video PLUS the 2 separate threats of violence (and in one case, specifically shooting) over the past week PLUS fireworks at school today EQUALS a massive and immediate repsonse to a known threat. Why are you so hellbent on dismissing the threats and the resulting concern of parents? Seriously man, what is your deal?

  4. Just saw on KSBY that “Sheriff’s officials said they received reports of possible fireworks being set off in the area. ” Possible fireworks were also what the cop at the Parkland high school reported….. Let’s pray this isn’t the case here! Especially after all the graffiti threats!

  5. They just cancelled the code 33 but it sounded like they were going to bring in the DOJ for a second there…Who ever is pulling the joke better knock it off or they are going to find themselves in a world of crap…Cops aien’t playing.

  6. Even if it is all bullshit you can never be too safe when it comes to kids and school shootings the one time a big deal is not made of it is the time it is real..All this response on the side of Law Enforcement is necessary … If it wasn’t real how come it happens anywhere? 2006, and 2014 There were mass shootings in Goleta….I hope there will not be anymore.

  7. Because the difference btw firearm shots and fire crackers isn’t immediately apparent, both must be treated as serious threats. For that reason, should the culprit be found, he should be punished to some extent, but most of all should be educated to the seriousness of ‘crying wolf’. If anyone has a great idea how to get the latter across to all the students, step forward. I remember well how skeptical we were about such things and “what a gas” it was to mess with the heads of authorities. The bottom line is adolescents don’t have a lot of forethought.

  8. I’m not sure, Howard, but I believe the approximate number at this point is zero–which coincidentally is how many kids have been murdered in school shootings by people using firecrackers, you insufferable douche.

  9. The handle name he’s chosen (look up Howard Roark if you haven’t recognized it) flashes the word “TROLL” rather brightly. Just like MrTrump, Factotum, and some of the other detritus from the Indy/NHawk commenting sewer.
