Stellan Skarsgård will receive the prestigious Montecito Award at the 41st annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Wednesday, February 11th. The evening will highlight his performance in Joachim Trier’s SENTIMENTAL VALUE in which he plays Gustav Borg, a once celebrated but now reclusive film director hoping to reunite with his estranged daughters while trying to reclaim his lost fame. Critics are hailing his performance as one of the best of his storied career, cementing him as one of cinema’s greats.
“I’ve been a big fan of Stellan since his work in Lars Von Trier’s Breaking the Waves. From that point on, I was drawn to his performances because of his versatility and his deep emotional delivery. He makes it look easy to embody both complex protagonists and nuanced villains with gravitas and an ability to convey profound emotional depth,” said SBIFF’s Executive Director Roger Durling.
SENTIMENTAL VALUE also stars Elle Fanning, Renate Reinsve and Inga Lilleaas. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it received widespread acclaim and won the Grand Prix. It is Norway’s official submission for the Best International Feature category at the Academy Awards.
Skarsgård began acting professionally in Sweden in the 1960s, gaining early fame at the age of 17 for his role in the TV series Bombi Bitt och jag, quickly becoming a prominent figure in Swedish theater and film throughout the 1970s and ’80s. His breakthrough on the international stage came in the 1990s with critically acclaimed performances in films such as The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Lars von Trier’s Breaking the Waves.
Skarsgård’s Hollywood career took off with his roles in Good Will Hunting (1997) and Amistad (1997). He later became a familiar face in major franchises, playing ‘Bootstrap Bill’ in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, ‘Bill Anderson’ in the Mamma Mia! franchise, and ‘Dr. Erik Selvig’ in the Thor and Avengers films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
At the same time, he maintained strong ties to European cinema, frequently collaborating with auteur directors like von Trier and Hans Petter Moland. His performance as ‘Boris Shcherbina’ in HBO’s Chernobyl (2019) earned him a Golden Globe and widespread critical praise, reaffirming his talent for portraying morally and psychologically intricate characters. Skarsgård’s consistent presence in major film and television projects like Dune: Part Two and the Star Wars series Andor underscores his enduring relevance and broad appeal.
