Staples will close their large downtown Santa Barbara location on State Street by July 20, reports John Palminteri of KEYT News.

At 410 State Street near the corner of Gutierrez Street, the 17,000 square foot location did not renew its lease. Although there currently isn't a new tenant for the space, the location does offer a good amount of parking, opposed to other retail spaces. 77 spaces to be exact, in a highly desirable area where parking is limited.

The Staples location in the Camino Real Marketplace in Goleta will remain open.

There are several empty storefronts in the lower section of State Street. The longtime vacant storefront next door to Staples just gained a new tenant, Habitat Home & Garden.

New businesses are expected to open in the area including Mollie's Italian restaurant,  Night Lizard Brewing,  Industrial Ale, and Creamistry ice cream.

"Businesses" not "Business's" I really need to check for grammar, spelling, syntax and so forth before posting. Sorry about that.

How many even work in offices today that need this day to day office supply inventory? Government is the biggest employer in town - they procure their own supplies. Students get supplies at their student book stores. The rest order on line. Changing face of retail, yet again. Plus the edges of this town got unsavory.

Does anyone else remember not so long ago the complaints about the small parking spaces at Staples, and the lack of them? Not enough for convenient parking, since Staples shares the lot? Who wrote the about face?

Same here recently and therein is a clue as to why they are leaving. Back in the day...20 years ago before Amazon it was hard to find parking there, they even had an attendant as I recall for awhile.

Hooray, I guess that now means that Office Max can increase their prices!? What a strange business model.. where both businesses will match competitor prices, BUT, their prices are identical.. no competition. This, of course, is after both starved out the local competition. Just a waiting game until the sole competition dries up after not being able to exist on such slim margins and to the winner goes the spoils.

There's a science fiction story about a future in which all restaurants, top to bottom, are named "Taco Bell". It may have been made into a movie, and does seem that's the way business's are headed. Anti-monopoly laws haven't been universally enforced for decades. Oligopolies where 2 or more venues collude by setting prices and services (think Cox/Comcast/Frontier) have become the norm. Terrifically profitable business model if politicians are "honest" and stay bought.
