NASA’s Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer, also known as the SPHEREx space telescope, has captured its first test images of the cosmos. This is a significant milestone for the mission that was launched in March 2025 from the Vandenberg Space Force Base aboard a Falcon-9 and has been undergoing a critical test phase.
Highlights
- NASA has released the first set of images of the universe as captured by SPHEREx.
- The telescope was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon-9 in March 2025.
- The images will help investigate the role of frozen water and organic molecules in star and planet formation.
SPHEREx Space Telescope’s Journey So Far
Following the launch of the SPHEREx mission from the Central Coast of California, it has completed an initial commissioning phase. The phase helped with the calibration and testing of the telescope. NASA confirmed that the spacecraft is operating as expected and that its detectors and optical systems are functioning correctly.
The images preview the telescope’s ability to observe the sky in 102 infrared wavelengths. The telescope has been designed to scan the sky every six months in order to build a map of the universe. SPHEREx is aimed at answering the fundamental questions about the role of molecules and water in the formation of stars and planets.
The early set of pictures released by NASA are a preview of the capabilities of the SPHEREx telescope. This marks an important step in its primary science mission. The data from the test shows the ability to measure light across over 100 near-infrared wavelengths. This enables SPHEREx to capture regions of the universe invisible to the human eye.
This mission is going to be transformative and incredibly critical to the understanding of the chronicles of the galaxies, stars, and planets. To learn more about the mission and its role in taking modern astronomy to greater heights, visit NASA’s official website for updates.
