Southern California Edison Crews to Perform Grid Upgrades in Goleta Area, Intermittent Outages Expected

Southern California Edison will conduct planned maintenance on power lines in Goleta and surrounding unincorporated Santa Barbara County areas this weekend, with work scheduled to begin Sunday, June 7 and continue through Wednesday, June 10.

Approximately 150 customers may experience intermittent power outages throughout the four-day period as crews complete grid upgrade work. SCE said power may need to be temporarily shut off more than once to ensure worker safety during the project.

Affected customers have been notified through their preferred communication channels with specific information about outage timing, according to the utility. Local officials have also been alerted to the planned work.

Residents in the work area should expect to see crews, construction equipment, and possible traffic controls during the maintenance period.

How to Prepare

SCE encourages customers to prepare for potential outages by assembling an emergency preparedness kit and having a plan in place. The utility recommends the following supplies:

• Flashlights and fresh batteries
• Battery-operated or hand-crank radio
• External rechargeable battery packs for cellphones and devices
• Bottled water (experts recommend one gallon per person per day)
• Non-perishable food items that don’t require cooking or heating
• Manual can opener
• Coolers, ice chests, and ice packs
• First aid kit with prescription medications
• Copies of insurance cards and medical information

Households with infants, older adults, individuals with medical needs, or pets should ensure they have appropriate supplies for those family members.

For those considering generator use during outages, SCE urges caution. Portable generators should only be operated outdoors in well-ventilated areas, away from windows, doors, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. The utility warns against connecting portable generators directly to home wiring or electrical panels, as this can create dangerous backfeed that poses electrocution risks to residents, neighbors, and utility workers.

Anyone planning to permanently wire a generator to their home must notify SCE first by calling 1-800-655-4555 and should hire a licensed electrician to install a proper power transfer switch.

SCE said crews will work to restore service as quickly as possible and thanked customers for their patience as the utility completes the infrastructure improvements.
