Santa Barbara County firefighters and a group of bystanders extinguished a small brush fire near the Highway 154 roundabout in Santa Ynez on Tuesday.
At 4:48 p.m., County Fire ME32 arrived on Highway 154, east of the SR-246 roundabout and discovered several bystanders attempting to extinguish a roadside grass fire.
Firefighters stopped the forward progress at approximately 20 by 100 feet at 4:48 p.m. A second engine assisted with the mop up and all other resources were cancelled.
“As [temperatures] climb this week, stay alert and report smoke or fire immediately. If you attempt to extinguish a fire before crews arrive, use extreme caution—wind can rapidly spread flames through tall grass, causing serious burns,” the Fire Department stated.
The Fire Department went on to advise residents to avoid hiking during extreme heat and to choose cooler conditions, like heading to the beach instead.
