Disturbance call at 10:45a (Monday) in the 3800 block of State Street. There was a lot happening here. Someone called about the kids being disruptive and might have seen a handgun. This call was also connected to a possible shoplifting report from the Macy’s Department store at La Cumbre.
SB Police responded and followed the vehicle description of the caller, a dark gray Prius filled with teens.
Police made a felony stop at the undercrossing near Hollister and Modoc.
Six juveniles were detained and two handguns were recovered, although they are replicas. Sounds like the vehicle is being impounded but cannot confirm it. Unclear if any items that were allegedly stolen were recovered.
Traffic was diverted in the area for a short time while making the stop.
They’ll all be eating at McDonalds and yuking it up by 6pm tonight.
I’ll tell you why they should be detained Sac – so they don’t repeat this: robbery w fake guns (are you looking to get shot at by a security guard?)
COAST – think about it. The charges may be as minimal as disturbing the peace based on these facts. If they have a couple airsoft guns in the car and they’re just screwing around, they won’t be detained overnight. Why should they? Obviously, they should be charged and sentenced for the appropriate crime though. Now, if they used those airsoft guns (or whatever replica means) to shoplift at Macy’s, then a good chance they’ll be detained longer and rightfully so.
BASIC – ” robbery w fake guns” – if that’s what they did, then OF COURSE they should be detained for a while. I’m just saying, based on the facts in the article, it might not have been shoplifting.

The shoplifting was “possibly connected,” so we really don’t know. I’m just saying they probably won’t be detained if they were just screwing around without committing any serious crimes.

There is no common sense in replying to Sacjon. It’s about INTENT. Carrying out shop lifting is already a criminal act and mindset… Bringing fake guns, that to a VICTIM of their crime, is clearly beyond “disturbing the peace”. Imagine your Mom, sister or kid being confronted by someone stealing/robbing/shoplifting and threatening them with a gun if they try to stop them…
Alex: They are vastly more interested in punishing people than in actually preventing crime. I suspect in most cases they were hit or otherwise abused as children and it conditioned them to want to pass it along.
Found some more actual facts from KEYT. Looks like they did have some clothes with tags in the car and the reporting witness says they saw one of the kids holding a gun in the parking lot, but nothing indicates they used the fake guns in the shoplifting. If they did, I’d think there’d be some Macy’s employees and customers reporting it. But who knows….
Fact remains, this is under investigation. Charges and sentencing should be based on facts, not assumptions. That’s the point I keep trying to make.

If what you described actually happened, there will be charges appropriate to the acts.
You don’t need to try and “imagine” all of this or create yet another fantasy world.
If these minors did what you are fantasizing they did, then they need to be put in to a diversion program that will keep them from continuing down the path to the point where they are using real guns in major crimes and end up in prison costing us around ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS per year and causing terrible misery and violence and trauma to others.
The short sightedness with which so many people view the issue of juvenile crime is beyond staggering. The idea here is to interrupt the path and behaviors that will have law abiding people like me having to look out for “kids” like this for possibly decades.
I’m selfish. I don’t want my stuff to be stolen, I don’t want my family and friends to be robbed, attacked, or harasses because a fourteen year old has no real options available to them and becomes a twenty year old hardened criminal.
The lack of common sense from so many people on this topic is truly phenomenal.
If it was up to some of the posters on here they’d be windchimes by now.

As I said elsewhere, if you aren’t going to put a bullet in the head of everyone who commits a crime and remove them from society all together, then it is in everyone’s interests to talk about what actually works when it comes to things like recidivism and juvenile crime.
But that rarely happens because of these very ancient thoughts on revenge and eye for an eye thinking.

Might have seen a handgun, which means a reporting person thought they saw what might be real gun otherwise the report would be kids with a fake gun.
Using a fake gun in a way that intimidates another person (Which is a very low threshold) is a minimum 30 day sentence. Using a fake gun in the commission of a robbery can be 25 years. Why? Because the person threatened by the fake gun doesn’t know it is a fake gun and has every reason to fear for their life

Gotta call out a couple of the ultra-liberal posters here – sure, go ahead and let them go sans repercussions, make up an excuse or scenario or two as to what not-so-criminal things they were doing, and also blame anyone who would have them held accountable for being what, too mean? A lot of us made bad choices as kids, and if you did you’d know what I mean by this – until you get caught/called out in a very serious way you’ll likely continue to screw up, and the longer these guys keep doing this and getting away with it the more likely they’ll be permanent losers. I ask, how does making excuses for them and minimizing what they’re doing help them?

For a double standard, compare the comments here to the screeching by the same folks about “massive prosecutorial overreach” concerning some guy who did not get arrested today.
There’s a reason that all of us have heard the old saying ‘you reap what you sow’. It’s legit. Unfortunately, only some of us still believe that.
These teenagers bail on school, possess fake guns, and rob a department store. They and their parents need to change what they’re doing. Making excuses for them isn’t going to cut it. We already have enough adult criminals running around. They still have a chance to get their act together, but it won’t happen unless they have consequences for their actions.
Basic, what if there aren’t parents who are willing or able to provide the kind of guidance you’re talking about?
Then what? People who think like you have no response but “oh well” and then they go to jail and have negative impacts and significant costs for ALL OF US for decades.
Even the most selfish person should be able to exercise some common sense in their own best interests, it amazes me how many people would rather abandon their own interests out of some bizarre need to punish rather than repair or prepare for the future. If you’re not going to put criminals up against a wall and remove them from society all together then any person with half a brain should be able to understand that you need to figure out how to divert them from the path they are on and reward them for being good and productive citizens.
But, no, that just makes too much sense.
10:45 a.m. on a Monday. If these juveniles had been in school they wouldn’t have been doing any of this alleged stuff. Was it a holiday/no classes day? Hope we see a follow-up post on this to clear up the “might” and “possible.” Maybe this incident was reported prematurely …

Don’t be soft on them. They need a good scare about choosing a path of crime. They are possibly young enough to scare and get a better outcome.
I think they need a good scare so maybe they will change course in their decisions. This is clearly a choice that should not have been made.
SZQ – they definitely need a good scare and if the facts show they committed any crimes (other than truancy and having fake funs – got to be 18 yo to possess airsoft I believe), they need to punished and incarcerated accordingly.
Liberals – get rid of hand guns, wait there is a crime with a hand gun, let them go and tell the victims to not be so insensitive to the perps feelings

But what we should agree on is the root cause, that kids need parents (or care givers) that raise them to not do stupid/unlawful things, else you will get more of this type of stuff.

My point was that the young people who did this don’t need to have used the gun during the actual shoplifting activity to be in trouble, big trouble and the best way to learn the seriousness of what they did would be to let them spend most of the night in holding under threat of the serious charges and then release them at 4AM. Their parents should help them understand that if they do this type of BS in LA County, they could get shot. A couple years ago LA area police shot and killed a guy who was on his friends patio holding a garden hose nozzle.
These kids would not be in less hot water if they had not brought along the handguns to rob Macy’s. Of course, not all the facts are in, but in all likelihood charges will be brought against those who actually carried and/or used the firearms during the commission of their crime(s). I don’t think they’ll be locked up for very long, but history shows us that thugs like these need to learn a lesson or two about respect. They all demand “respect” but don’t really know what respect is as they live in their own world. Some will survive the prison system just fine, but some will crumble and fail miserably. Let’s hope that at least one of them is able to turn their life around and be a productive, hard-working member of polite society. If not, then we have places for them to stay at taxpayer expense. When will they ever learn is the question.
BABY – agreed, if the facts showed they used them to “rob Macy’s.” Even just having them with them while committing a crime should be reason to charge them. Armed robbery? Not sure yet. But, having them in the car or in their hand in the parking lot is a serious problem and should be taken into account in the charges.
It is not even necessary to actually h-a-v-e a gun to get into a whole lot of trouble. For example, telling someone that you have a gun will do the trick. I had a friend who would specifically target Japanese tourists to rob in Hawaii back in the 70s. His weapon? He would take a dime, put it on his pointing finger and press it on the inside of his t-shirt. Sounds silly, but try it yourself and see what you think…..no one is going to think it’s a dime pressed up inside a t-shirt. He never got caught and was able to spend a couple years living on the beach and surfing all the time….using a dime!
CA under our One Party State of Control has tied the hands of the once operational Juvenile “Justice” system. There is NOTHING other than the crime of MURDER that holds juvenile’s accountable for their actions resulting in criminal behavior. That is a fact. Ask anyone in SB County Probation Dept. These “kids” KNOW that. They are empowered to do what they wish with a promise to appear in court.
