5:00 p.m., January 8, 2021

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting which occurred inside of a vehicle parked on Burtis St. in unincorporated Santa Barbara on Thursday afternoon.  The shooting left one victim deceased, and the other in critical condition at an area hospital.

On January 7, 2021, at around 12:30 pm, passerby’s in the area heard gunshots, then observed a subject flee from the area.  The witness observed the victims in the vehicle, and ran from the area to call 911.  Responding deputies discovered two males seated in the front seat of a parked vehicle in the 600 block of Burtis St.  One had suffered a fatal gunshot wound, the other was transported by paramedics.

The area between Hollister Ave. and Atascadero Creek from Turnpike to Patterson was issued a shelter in place order for several hours.  Deputies, K-9s and a County Air Support Unit helicopter searched the area for the suspect, however he was not located.

The deceased victim is a 19-year-old male who resided in the unincorporated area of Santa Barbara.  The surviving victim is a 19-year-old resident of Isla Vista and is listed in critical, but stable condition as of this afternoon.  The suspect was reported as being a male in his early 20’s, either white or Hispanic, with dark hair.  No further details are available at this time and the motive for the shooting has yet to be determined.  The suspect is still at large, however investigators do not believe that the general public is at risk.

Sheriff’s Detectives are asking for the public’s help.  With the prevalence of home security systems, cameras, and video doorbell technology, investigators are requesting residents within a half mile radius of Burtis St. to check their video systems for any suspicious activity between the hours of 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.  Suspicious activity could include unusual vehicles or persons, or activity that seems contrary to normal neighborhood activity.  Anyone with information or video should contact the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Bureau at 805-681-4150, or call the anonymous tip line at 805-681-4171.

Bring on the first amendment discussion. A poster has every right to tell anyone not to post their opinion. Any poster has the right to argue about it. And Edhat, as a private entity, has a right to delete such posts.

In addition, I say "more major crimes than before" meaning that there seems to be a spike in crime in a short span. There have always been major crimes every year, but 3 shootings and 2 stabbings just in a week, is not normal.

I'd like to reiterate on my comment. I am not talking about crime in this neighborhood, I am talking about the crime in all of Goleta + SB. With all of Edhat news, Roger's reports, and from what I hear on the scanner as well, it seems as though there have been more major crimes than before. There have been at least 3 confirmed shootings this week, 2 resulting in deaths. This is just one example. Though in total, SB fairly safe, things just happen. It happens in all cities.

I don't think you realize how elitist that statement sounds. There is no "bad" area in Santa Barbara/Goleta. We are all privileged to live here. I am happy to raise my kids in any area and attend any school SB/Goleta has to offer. This is the unfortunate SB bubble mentality that we see with the long timers here.

People in SB are so soft! I grew up in Oakland, which was considered crime-ridden and overrun with homeless and transients at the time. SB is a beautiful safe place to live and raise kids. And so was Oakland. Tragedy happens in wonderful places.

I guess I have to be more specific when I say "over here." I'm not talking about the neighborhood, I'm talking about both Goleta + SB crime as a whole. t seems like there's been more shooting and deaths from it recently, as well as other major crimes.

This is tragic, but we have loved living in this area for over 9 years and it's been great for our kids. "Affordable" Santa Barbara, centrally located, near the bike path, More Mesa, a mile from the ocean. A lot of good people live in this area. We have really enjoyed it.

SCANNERANDREW it's been nasty over there for years. We rented a beautiful 3 bedroom near there for a couple years 10 years ago and I'm so glad we moved out to West Goleta, even to a smaller home. I'm so happy my kids didn't grow up in that area.
