Sheriff's Office Asks for Help in Fatal Goleta Shooting Leads

Update by Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office
5:00 p.m., January 8, 2021
The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting which occurred inside of a vehicle parked on Burtis St. in unincorporated Santa Barbara on Thursday afternoon. The shooting left one victim deceased, and the other in critical condition at an area hospital.
On January 7, 2021, at around 12:30 pm, passerby’s in the area heard gunshots, then observed a subject flee from the area. The witness observed the victims in the vehicle, and ran from the area to call 911. Responding deputies discovered two males seated in the front seat of a parked vehicle in the 600 block of Burtis St. One had suffered a fatal gunshot wound, the other was transported by paramedics.
The area between Hollister Ave. and Atascadero Creek from Turnpike to Patterson was issued a shelter in place order for several hours. Deputies, K-9s and a County Air Support Unit helicopter searched the area for the suspect, however he was not located.
The deceased victim is a 19-year-old male who resided in the unincorporated area of Santa Barbara. The surviving victim is a 19-year-old resident of Isla Vista and is listed in critical, but stable condition as of this afternoon. The suspect was reported as being a male in his early 20’s, either white or Hispanic, with dark hair. No further details are available at this time and the motive for the shooting has yet to be determined. The suspect is still at large, however investigators do not believe that the general public is at risk.
Sheriff’s Detectives are asking for the public’s help. With the prevalence of home security systems, cameras, and video doorbell technology, investigators are requesting residents within a half mile radius of Burtis St. to check their video systems for any suspicious activity between the hours of 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Suspicious activity could include unusual vehicles or persons, or activity that seems contrary to normal neighborhood activity. Anyone with information or video should contact the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Bureau at 805-681-4150, or call the anonymous tip line at 805-681-4171.

Jan 07, 2021 05:46 PMI am surprised, they didn't find this guy...or the one last weekend.
The survivor, today, and the two, last week, probably know a lot !
Could be scared of retaliation...don't know ?
Gang, bad drug deal, not Eagle Scout's, but need to talk.

Jan 07, 2021 10:39 PMYes, it would seem the shooter fired from the passenger side, killing the passenger, severely wounding the driver. Not a lot of physical evidence beyond bullets and maybe shell casings if the weapon was an auto pistol. SO ran a couple of dog tracks, with no results. Best leads might be from statements of the surviving victim, if he is able to do so.
Strange to me that there were no other citizen calls beyond the girl's report. Did no neighbors hear anything?

Jan 07, 2021 08:07 PMIf you're referring to the NH photo, note that it was taken after the occupants were removed, and both doors are open. Who knows where that glass was before those actions, or whether it was shattered in order to get the door open. Bullets would tend to punch discrete holes in the glass, rather than shatter it so thoroughly.

Jan 08, 2021 10:11 AMSBMOM - Hahah oh wow... you didn't even read them, did you? Not a single one was from yesterday (5/2019, 10/2020, 4/2020) and they were ALL around the Turnpike/Walnut area. One was on Walnut, another on Turnpike and the other was closer to Old Town, but still not far from that area. You are truly in denial and clearly didn't read them. The point is, you're wrong. There HAS been crime in that area, just as there has been all over SB/Goleta over the years. Look here, just a search of "Walnut" on Edhat brings up tons of Scanner Report incidents --- https://www.edhat.com/search/node/walnut ----- That area around Walnut/Turnpike has been pretty active on the criminal front for years. Nice try though!

Jan 07, 2021 08:09 PMWell, I had a SWAT team in my front yard once, taking in a neighbor, I think it was Gator Roll, but that event didn't change how much I loved my apartment building and neighborhood. I get both takes on this argument.

Jan 07, 2021 02:19 PMMore shootings. Until California is rid of criminal loving politicians, this will continue. This is the worst I’ve seen this state and no one is demanding answers. I guess as long as your weed is delivered and you can stay in your house watching Netflix, who cares?

Jan 09, 2021 09:35 PMOf course, tallying of statistics is dependent upon, among other things, the definition of hate crime. I urge readers to look into other sources beyond the DoJ. Enforcement of civil rights varies under different administrations. Check out organizations that monitor such things.
I realize that the "liberal" source of information re: hate crimes will be criticized, and used to negate my argument, let alone the statistics. Nothing I can do about that.
I searched "number of attacks on jewish organizations during trump administration"
(all are free to access but might have popups)
https://www.vox.com/world/2017/3/13/14880808/anti-semitism-bomb-threats-trump-obama
According to FBI: https://www.jta.org/2020/11/16/united-states/anti-semitic-hate-crimes-rose-by-14-in-2019-according-to-the-fbi
https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2020-11-16/hate-crimes-in-us-reach-highest-level-in-more-than-a-decade
https://www.baltimoresun.com/opinion/op-ed/bs-ed-op-0106-jewish-violence-20200106-zxy6mvycszaitmjdwpno53kuhe-story.html
I won't go further to address violence and hate against Blacks. It's easy to find. And to see.

Jan 09, 2021 06:05 AMAs per your links, It actually looks like hate crimes are down from 10 years ago. They are up slightly the last couple of years, but not much...and are lower than where they were in the early 2000’s. So I guess we were both right/wrong... they are slightly up the last couple of years...but long term are down!

Jan 09, 2021 04:27 AMNo. Anonymous posters are not "always the problem with EdHat." The worse problem is people who have vendettas against someone they have disagreed with in the past and then just down vote that person no matter what they say in the future. That is the worst problem with EdHat and the impact of this pettiness is lessened by anonymous posting. Then people can judge a comment by it's content, rather than by it's author.

Jan 08, 2021 11:11 PMI think both. Hate crimes are up.
You might want to look into stats from SPLC, ADL, ACLU, NAACP, FBI, Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights (whose director will be heading the DoJ's Civil Rights Division), and I could think of more.
https://www.justice.gov/hatecrimes/facts-and-statistics
https://www.justice.gov/hatecrimes/hate-crime-statistics
If one is not familiar with the organizations cited, select and right click -- you'll get a drop-down menu that includes searching your browser for the selected term.

Jan 08, 2021 10:35 PMWhat’s my posting history? And if I had asked it anonymously, what would you have said? Why does that matter? Are hate crimes up... or are we simply labeling more things a hate crime now?

Jan 08, 2021 09:31 PMIt's difficult to imagine that someone with your posting history could ask an "honest" question. Ask it anonymously and you might get a better response. As it stands, readers will take it in the context of your posting history. Sorry, but true, that's how social media works.
