It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Sheriff’s K9 Chop who was partnered with Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Moore. Chop experienced a medical emergency yesterday. He was immediately rushed to emergency surgery, and sadly did not survive.  Chop was two-years-old.

Chop was an excellent K9, who has been patrolling with Deputy Moore for the past eleven months.  His mere presence caused the surrender and apprehension of many offenders. It was apparent in his young career that he loved going to work. Chop was brought to the Sheriff’s Office via funding from the Sheriff’s Benevolent Posse’s Project Deputy Dog program. Chop is the second dog purchased for the Sheriff’s Office thanks to a generous donation from Reece and Christine Duca of Carpinteria. The Ducas, who have three dogs of their own, named Chop after the nickname of a loyal, close family friend.

The bond between a handler and K9 is strong - they spend an immense amount of time training together for life threatening situations, they work together every day and they live together. In his announcement to Sheriff’s Office Employees, Sheriff Brown asked that we keep Deputy Moore and the rest of the K9 family in our thoughts as they work through this difficult time.

What was the medical emergency and why aren't they telling us? This is a heartbreaking loss. GSDs are the best dogs, so loyal, so intelligent. I'm sorry, Chop, you deserved a longer life.

Reminds me of a Joan Baez song about a dog named Blue. There are good ones and bad ones in every species. It's sad when a good one die so young whether dog, human or anything else.

A traumatic and distressing occurrence. Condolences to Chop's handler Deputy Moore and to Moore's family and to all in the Sheriffs department who knew this wonderful dog.

I too wonder, and I hope we will learn the cause of death. Having shared my life with numerous GSDs for over 40 years since their puppyhood days, I wonder if Chop might have experienced bloat (gastric torsion) or suffered from an as-yet undetected congenital defect. RIH, Chop. Condolences to Deputy Shane Moore.

Exactly! Why tell us he had one without details? As a dog owner I learn from things like this, it helps me to avoid the same situations!

Wow, I watched K9 training yesterday afternoon! Don't know if it was K9 Chop, but it certainly looked like him. They were practicing scent work, and the dog looked healthy, happy and enthusiastic. RIP K9 Cash. Good dog.
