Sheriff Deputies Pursue Suspect into Ocean

Update by edhat staff

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies pursued a suspect through the Bacara Hotel ending in the ocean where a water rescue was performed.

At 2:26 p.m. Saturday, Santa Barbara County Fire Water Rescue were called to an ocean area off Sandpiper Golf Course, just south of the Bacara Hotel. Upon arrival, rescue crews found a man swimming in the water. They learned that earlier, Sheriff’s Deputies were pursuing the man during a short chase that went through the Bacara and oil property adjacent to the hotel, said SBCFD Captain Dave Zaniboni.

The suspect ended up on the beach and swam into the ocean past the surf line where Deputies trailed him before calling in a water rescue to retrieve the suspect. Rescue teams used jet skis to retrieve the man who appeared to be exhausted and complaining of hypothermia, said Zaniboni.

Crews transported the man to the beach where he was then arrested and taken to Cottage Hospital to be evaluated for possible hypothermia.

  1. Poor woman this dude was stalking. Getting a court order against him likely made her feel reasonably safe, then yuck, there he is at a hotel stalking her. Perhaps they shouldn’t give him bail so she can really be safe.
