Did anyone else see the hundred of small sharks off Deveraux Point on Saturday? I didn't have my phone on me and wasn't able to take pictures to send to edhat. Did anyone else capture photos? Would love to see them.

Sharks Off Deveraux Point

I have seen these schools of sharks from the bluffs earlier this summer. Surfers and swimmers seem unaware of them and the sharks scoot away as people come and go in the water.

I saw the same type of schooling for about a week in 78 while surfing at campus point between the wedge and polls. Definitely Leopard Sharks. Super Cool , bottom at 10' clearly visible . :)

What you saw was probably an aggregation of leopard sharks. These are harmless sharks that form large aggregations along the coast. The east side of the point is an important area for these sharks and they can be seen there most of the year. Student researchers at UCSB are studying this aggregation and trying to understand why this is site is so important for leopard sharks. There is a nice video coming soon. I am glad to hear you had a nice shark encounter, what a treat.
