Santa Barbara is one of those rare places where kids can run barefoot on the beach in the morning and explore oak-shaded trails in the afternoon. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, guardian, or babysitter, you quickly realize that our town is an outdoor playground.
With the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other, there’s no shortage of fun, family-friendly activities that help kids connect with nature, burn off energy, and make real-life memories far from screens.
Here are some of the best outdoor activities for kids in Santa Barbara—straight from a local who’s always on the hunt for new adventures to share with the little ones.
1. The Santa Barbara Zoo
We can’t talk about kid-friendly outdoor spots without mentioning the zoo. Small enough to walk through in a morning but packed with charm, the Santa Barbara Zoo is ideal for kids of all ages. You can ride the train, watch the giraffes munch leaves with an ocean view in the background, or let toddlers explore the climbing area near the gorillas. Bring a blanket and make it a picnic day.
2. Chase Palm Park & Shipwreck Playground
Right across from East Beach is a favorite among local families—Chase Palm Park. The shipwreck-themed playground is always buzzing with imaginative play. After some playground fun, take a walk down the palm-lined path, splash in the tide, or grab snacks at one of the nearby cafes.

3. Tidepooling at Hendry’s Beach (Arroyo Burro)
Hendry’s, lovingly referred to by locals as “Dog Beach,” is also one of the best places to go tidepooling during low tide. The cliffs provide a stunning backdrop, and you’ll often spot sea anemones, starfish, and tiny crabs hiding among the rocks. Just check the tide charts before you go. Bonus: There’s a rinse station to wash sandy feet and a dog-friendly cafe (Boathouse) where grownups can enjoy a bite.
4. Hiking at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
This spot offers short, scenic trails that are great for families. Kids can play “nature detective” while exploring redwood groves, cactus gardens, and native meadows. There’s a creek that runs seasonally and tree stumps to hop across. It’s educational without feeling like a chore, and the open space makes it easy to let them roam a little.
5. Skateboarding or Scootering at Skater’s Point
Located near Stearns Wharf, Skater’s Point is one of the most scenic skate parks around. If your kiddo is into skateboarding or just learning to balance on a scooter, this is a great space. It’s beginner-friendly during off-peak hours and there’s a playground just next door if they want to switch gears.
6. Explore the Douglas Family Preserve
This undeveloped coastal bluff is a peaceful escape where kids can hike, spot paragliders launching off the cliffs, and say hello to off-leash dogs. It’s not stroller-friendly, but for older kids it’s an adventure—and the views are unbeatable. Bring binoculars for a chance to see whales or dolphins offshore.
7. Santa Barbara Harbor & Breakwater Walk
Sometimes the simplest outings are the best. Walking along the harbor lets kids watch fishermen unload their boats, see sea lions napping, and maybe even catch the harbor patrol in action. Grab an ice cream at the end of the breakwater and take in the sailboats and sunset views.
Final Thoughts
Santa Barbara is a kid’s paradise if you know where to look. Whether you’re entertaining toddlers, keeping up with energetic school-aged kids, or bonding with teens who just want a great view, there’s a pocket of nature or adventure that will light them up. And the best part? You get to enjoy it too. So pack some snacks, don’t forget sunscreen , and get out there—some of the best memories are made under the Santa Barbara sun.

Good list but when she writes about Chase Palm Park that “there’s a carousel (open seasonally) that feels like stepping back in time” she’s a lot more accurate than she intended. You’d have to step back several years, since the carousel was removed permanently as least several years ago!
It was moved to a carousel museum in Hood River, Oregon, at the end of 2017.
Good catch! The article has been updated.
