Second Goleta Homeless Camp Fire Along Highway 101

Update by edhat staff
Santa Barbara County firefighters extinguished a brush fire that sparked near a homeless camp along Highway 101 on Monday afternoon.
After 2:30 p.m. firefighters responded to the area between the railroad tracks and Highway 101 southbound near the Los Carneros exit. A fire near a homeless encampment was spreading to the nearby vegetation and producing a large amount of smoke on the freeway.
Traffic restrictions were put in place as fire crews on the ground and helicopter making water drops worked to suppress the fire and knock it down. The forward progress of the fire has been stopped and crews will remain on scene to mop up.
There were no reported injuries and the official cause is under investigation.
This is the second brush fire in Goleta along Highway 101 that started near a homeless camp. Ten days ago another fire close the same area shut down both directions of Highway 101 and prompted buildings to evacuate fire jumped from the southbound to the northbound lanes.
There is a brush fire along Highway 101 southbound between the Fairview and Los Carneros exits.

Jul 13, 2020 02:57 PMOdd: I live a block off of Calle Real and just saw that the flame only appeared to be on the north side of the freeway in some brush and Eucalyptus trees. Don't see any signs that it's coming from the south side of the freeway near Haywards.

Jul 13, 2020 03:45 PMI could hear the popping and I believe that was caused by the eucalyptus trees burning not ammo

Jul 13, 2020 04:11 PMYeah, I heard it also. I'm pretty sure that it was eucalyptus trees. They can sound like a cannon when they burn.

Jul 13, 2020 04:13 PMYes. It must be ammunition. The only reasonable conclusion is that someone, for some unknown reason, was storing ammunition along the railroad tracks, and it just lit up. Stupid...

Jul 13, 2020 03:04 PMWe need to clear all the dead and overgrown foliage along the freeway and tracks now! The same goes for parks and all other public spaces. Relying on unplanned burns to clear and maintain public land is not a viable strategy in a densely populated area. Sooner or later one of these fires is going to start in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Jul 13, 2020 03:29 PMWhile I agree that is an issue that's been long overdue, it sounds like the jury's still out on how this one started. The location has been all over the place, so we should wait and hear the postmortem on this to figure out what happened and how to solve it.
At any rate, this is a recurring issue that's only getting more frequent. I've heard the city and Amtrak pointing fingers at who's responsible for clearing the brush. At some point, maybe the city needs to step in and handle it. If Amtrak's financially responsible and not doing anything, let's do it for them and then invoice it. Even if they never pay, I imagine it's cheaper than the cost of rebuilding an entire city. Lot of people out of work right now who'd probably jump at the chance to make some money clearing brush.

Jul 13, 2020 03:36 PMI don’t think it matters a whole lot what starts the fire. If we allow fuel to accumulate, fire will start. The solution is clearing the fuel and maintaining the landscape. No fuel, no problem.

Jul 13, 2020 04:16 PMChet...Amtrak doesn't own any ROW...it would be Union Pacific and their Police has way more than they would be able to handle here. The local police can enforce trespassing along here they just don't bother doing it.

Jul 13, 2020 04:45 PMok Chip, go for it! We'll be behind you rooting. Maybe get Trump out there with you with his rake....because you know....cutting down all of the trees and raking the land prevents fires....*smh*

Jul 13, 2020 04:09 PMSo the homeless encampment moved a couple of hundred yards and set another fire. How about at least drug testing them?

Jul 13, 2020 04:22 PM4:09 - why would drug testing the inhabitants prevent fires? Also, you can't just go taking blood from people without a warrant or probable cause.
