Update by edhat staff

The Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office confirms that officials are still looking for the two missing people from the Montecito mudslide.

On Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office posted photos on Facebook stating three California Rescue Dog Association (CARDA) dog teams assisted Santa Barbara County Search And Rescue with their search efforts.

The two people still missing are 2-year-old Lydia Sutthithepa (left) and 17-year-old Jack Cantin (right).

The storm in Montecito has claimed 21 victims, read more about them here.

It appears that most of Montecito are moving forward, but what about the two children still missing? Are officials still looking for them?

I'm concerned that redistributing of the mud and rocks may be burying those people even more and they’ll never be found. If they were my family members I would want them found first before any construction is started. Does anyone have any insight?

I am involved in the clean-up of the mudslide. If any of you people want to help get the mess cleaned up faster, and get paid for your work, contact the county and ask if any of the contractors involved are seeking workers to shovel mud. They are. Of course, if you own a business in Montecito, or are employed by a Montecito business, you can help out clearing the estimated 2.5 million cubic yards of debris. It's hard work, but you can show you actually care about the missing people that may be located somewhere in that debris.

I actively call BS on MRTRUMP claiming to be a cleaner-upper, because nobody involved in the clean-up of that community could express such heartless sentiments. At least that's what i choose to hope for.

Yikes. I dont' know that I'd want to return to my home to clean up thinking I might find the badly decomposed body of yet another victim, both so young.

And yes, I do have insight into what's happening in Montecito. I was/am involved in the rescue, search and debris removal efforts. I can tell you that perhaps only 2% of the mudslide as been removed. Inside hundreds of homes the mud is 3-4 feet deep. It will take months to clear all those homes and properties. Somewhere in that mess could be more victims ( I repeat, COULD BE). If all those business owners and employees were to grab shovels and work (and get paid) clearing the mudslide, the work would go much faster and the families of the missing would have answers sooner. But those business owners and employees don't want to get their hands dirty. They want to serve the beautiful people expresso.

Villainizing Montecito business owners and employees of the businesses for not picking up shovels and searching for those still missing?? How awful of you. Everyone has suffered and are grieving. To imply that a dishwasher at the Montecito Inn is a horrible person because he/she isn't actively digging through the mud looking for bodies? That's the worst take I've heard, ever. Be a human being, MRTRUMP.

Seems too early for all those businesses along Coast Village Road and the Upper Village to be rushing to reopen and make money. There are 2 people missing. Guess that's Montecito's definition of "Montecito Strong".

MRTRUMP: Not sure why you're intent on trolling so forcefully. A sense of SEMI-normal life is a great comfort to those in the community. To wish that nobody try to keep the paychecks flowing to their employees (many living paycheck to paycheck and who already saw life-altering gaps in said paychecks) is misguided. Shame on you.

That is like saying it is disrespectful to look at the stars while Macy's is having their yearly clearance sale, or you should not eat ice cream from New Zealand when the peeps are hiking on our local trials.

I totally get that sentiment - I became quite angry at a friend who went to deep sea winery and posted an ~artsy~ picture of themselves with Montecito in the background on the Tuesday immediately following the tragedy - but the way it was worded in your original post (and things you have said in other posts) don't carry that way. I also feel at this point, as people are going back to clean up, find items, move back in, these places may provide a nice escape where they can get something good to eat, warm to drink, and start to feel some semblance of normalcy amidst mass destruction and heartache. Opening up shop can provide places for people to gather and talk, mourn, heal, and I think that is a positive thing to start

It just seems disrespectful for businesses to be serving lattes and double cappuccinos while searchers are looking for the missing victims not too far away.

considering that there are hundreds of employees who work in these areas who have families to feed and bills to pay, yes, rushing to reopen IS Montecito strong. It means supporting our community and their needs during times of heartache and anguish. It means pulling together and bringing each other up NOT tearing each other down as you seem hell-bent on doing.

A quick Google search easily shows that there are still 2 people missing and remains dogs are searching in the immediate areas they were last seen. Should there be another plan?
