School Lockdowns Lifted After Police Investigate Man with Gun

Update by edhat staff

Two Goleta schools were placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a report was made of a man with a gun in the area.

Just before 2:00 p.m., Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Evergreen Park looking for a white male in a blue and white flannel who appeared to have a gun.

The Sheriff’s Office locked down Brandon and Montessori Schools and sent an alert to residents to stay out of the area.

A helicopter arrived to survey the area from above and was able to guide deputies to the suspect in the creek behind Waldorf School.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was carrying a pellet gun and was released on the scene.

Schools were reopened and responding officers went back into service.

  1. Look up Shay’s Rebellion to see why the founder wrote the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution. Many misinformed people share the belief that this “well-regulated militia” was about protecting from threats from outside, and insist now that our military can now do that job without the need for citizens to bear arms. So look up Shay’s Rebellion. What would you do, without arms, if a US politician (say a President) and their supporters committed an armed insurrection that the US government could not deal with. Forget what happened in January, I’m talking about a serious armed movement, as none of the people in January had a gun.

  2. The 2nd amendment is a complete anachronism, and these days is just an excuse for gun worship. Just as there are limits on 1st amendment rights to prevent abuse, the 2nd amendment needs rational limits.
The second amendment pertains to a “well-regulated militia”, and was formulated in a time when the colonists were opposed to a standing army. The rough equivalent today is the National Guard. The Founders’ view of “citizen” was that it was a white male property owner. Most of us have matured past that view, just as we should for firearms.
Any doofus with a rifle who thinks he would last more than a few minutes against the military is seriously deluded.

  3. 3:47, the constitution matured past the view that only white people are citizens with the addition of the fourteenth amendment. This ensures that all Americans are protected by the bill of rights. Ironically, democrats in the south passed some of the earliest gun control laws in order to deprive former slaves of their second amendment rights.

  4. @4:43, this pandemic showed the government has no problem putting aside power limiting and personal right protecting laws like Posse Comitatus whenever they feel like it. Just like the feds aren’t supposed to spy on Americans without warrants but Edward Snowden and Wikileaks blew that out of the water.

  5. Thank goodness that this ended up being a “nothingburger” event. LE definitely did the right thing in calling for a lock down. The kids wetting themselves and crying turned out to be for nothing. Freaking out about what c-o-u-l-d have happened is a far cry from what actually took place (the reality of the event).
Unfortunately, every time these events occur, sales of guns/ammo skyrocket, and there are more and more guns legally out there, and the stock of the public gun manufactures/suppliers goes up/up/up.
Thank you LE for keeping us safe, and we understand that you can’t always be there when we need you.
