Are there any scheduled beach clean-ups in the area that my company can volunteer for?

Scheduled Beach Cleanups?

Gaviota Coast Conservancy in conjunction with Surfrider Santa Barbara are doing a major beach clean up on January 12 in the afternoon. If you are interested in participating contact me, Ken Palley at [email protected] Of course all the comments about how to just do it on your own are quite correct but it sounds like you want an organized event for a corporate group and Surfrider has done many of those.

Yeah we should all clean up those vagrant encampments on the beach that are leaving trash everywhere. Can't enjoy walking by the beach anymore cuz it smells like cigarettes, marijuana smoke, and piss.

@11:19 PM. Yeah, the whole bike path from East beach to Ledbetter is like that. Shopping carts, junk, vagrants passed out, smoking and doing other drugs. I never see any police Patrol that area. I don't know why the city can't get police, harbor or park officers to patrol that area on bike regularly to do enforcement.

DEC 13, 2019 09:12 PM. You're writing specifically about East Beach, alongside the bike path/beachway? Chase Palm Park? I agree 110%. It has got so bad there, just driving past you start to feel like you're in some zombie walking dead movie with all the raggedy forlorn-looking people shuffling along and the amazing amount of grocery carts piled high with their junk.

Scheduled Beach Cleanups?

Watershed Resource Center at Arroyo Burro Beach has led beach clean-ups on the 2nd Sunday each month from 10am -noon the last 6 months, but there is no word on if they will continue in 2020...maybe in the spring?

Or . . . You can just do what I do and pick up trash when I see it in the parks, on the beaches, in parking lots, alongside curbs. On some occasions I pass things by, but usually when I see trashy bits I figure it's good exercise (and good for the soul) to bend over and pick it up. At a beach this evening, inexplicably, there were quite a few plastic bottle caps. I picked up all of those (about a dozen or so) some tiny bits of white rubbery plastic (looked like shell bits, but not), bits of styrofoam, a tarry golf ball, a tarry red plastic straw, a bright pink little plastic planter pot, a couple large beer cans . . . Many items that other beach walkers stepped right over. I like seeing "my" beaches and parks clean.

Sign up with the County or City. The will provide bags, gloves, and trash disposal.

You could contact the businesses that have Adopt A Highway stretches throughout SB City area. They could really use the help as the litter just sits there and accumulates, month after month after month. AAH is supposed to be done every month in this area. SB city has the trashiest freeway in the state. Roadsides and medians are lined with trash. Plus they have homeless encampments along there. A few days ago, I saw two guys sitting in beach chairs next to the freeway in the easement (near Carrillo) . The area where they were sitting was filled with trash. A few hundred yards south is an encampment......in full view of motorists. welcome to Santa Barbara. Montecito and Goleta are not much better. At Las Positas in the northbound offramp area, there is a pile of junk in the bushes....growing daily. Caltrans knows about all this but doesn't do enough to keep a handle on the problem.

Looks like SB County has a year-round program you can apply/sign up for, if you have at least 10 people: http://www.countyofsb.org/parks/volunteerbeach.sbc
