Scanner Reports 9-29-17

Whenever I end a report I always say a bunch of names then these folks willing, we will see you next time. These are people who were great friends in my life who have passed on. I truly believe someday I will see them again.  I hope so, as we all hope someday we will see our loved ones again. Every time I write down their names, a memory comes up, how I remember them at their best. I miss them all very much. Belinda was my best friend and the love of my life, my partner. I trusted her more than anyone I have ever known and I think of her most of the time. Angel Baby was one of my kitties. She used to live near the bridge at Quarantina and Highway 101. I took tuna to her a couple times and she followed me home. She was with me 10 years, ‘til someone who disliked me had my Angel Baby killed. It’s a horrible heart-wrenching experience when someone not brave enough to confront you goes after an innocent loved one. But their time will come and I hope I’m there to help it pass.

Angel Baby, though a cat, was like my mother, only more motherly. Pooh Bear was a white cat who was given to me by a homeless woman wanted by the law. He spent most of his time in our yard anyway. He was Angel Baby’s partner. He ran on the freeway, got rolled up by a car, shattering a leg and losing it. He still ran like the wind and lived as a whole 3-legged kitty for 16 years. Clancy was my first kitty, a stray from a field on the Upper East Side. He was only with me for 4 years and passed of feline leukemia. I did not love him any less than the others. Poncho was a sober biker I spent a lot of time with at the Alano Club. Jerry is Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. C.J. was an ex-girlfriend who saved my life after I ODed back in 2003. We also lived together several years; I always thought she was too good for me.

Jonathan was a Sober Brother I took in after he got stabbed on the East Side in the 80’s. I worked nights and he crashed in my pad nights, cooked me meals in return. He was one of my best friends who died tragically in the Marina Santa Barbara back in the 90’s. Brad was my best buddy for many years. We sobered up together in Newhouse; me in 1980, he in 81. I went out and got drunk several times and he started hanging with others. I used to love to embarrass him when we went out for coffee. I’d act like we were a couple and he was my boyfriend and he’d really get embarrassed.

Billy was a great friend and a hairstylist at Heads Above the Rest at State and Mission. He passed on in October of 2003. ELMO started Newhouse in 1955. I had the pleasure of meeting him and staying in NH 2 when he lived there in his later years. He caught me breaking into the pay phone. He told me he was going to tell on me the manager who could not figure out where the pile of quarters came from sitting on his desk the next morning. ELMO was senile and forgot. Walter was my landlord here on Milpas Street. People are shocked when they find out how long I have lived here. Fred, a Sober Brother from the early years at NH 2 and a WW2 Hero.  Carl was Carl Gains, a professional weightlifter, Mr. Universe in the 60’s and 70’s, a great friend and a Sober Brother. Stan was my AA sponsor, the only one that pushed me over the edge. Kent was Stan’s best friend and a great friend to me also. Patrick recently passed on. He had been homeless for a time, then sobered up with several others, got some time under his belt had a great sober life. One night went to bed never woke up.

Christy was a homeless gal in the ‘hood who always treated me very nice and always said hello.  Rambo was a homeless guy who I hired once in a while, as he was very honest and a good-hearted soul. He got the nickname Rambo one night after getting drunk and doing some damage. Sherry was his girlfriend. Magruder could be a real pain in the ars, but he was a lot of fun to drink with. I’ll never forget the time we were drunk and were gonna fight. He jumped up, got the spins, ran into a door and got knocked out. When he came to, he thought I had punched him out and begged me not to hit him again. Don was one of his sidekicks I did not know very long before he became ill and passed away. Edwin was on the streets a long time collecting bottles and cans for his alcohol and cigarettes. He never panhandled until the end when he started losing his mind. Before he became homeless, his wife had been murdered, breaking his heart. He gave up living under a roof and working. He became homeless in the early 80’s.  Cory was an Irishman, accent and all, a gentleman, a very nice good-looking helpful man who loved the women. Diana was a friend from Lompoc, a fellow scanner listener and reporter. Marty was Shakey’s brother and a tow truck driver, when he lived here last. Cop John, a police officer and Sober Brother I hung out with a lot. He died of bone cancer and he worked on the day he died, so the story goes. Isabelle and Jerry were my neighbors when I first moved here. They’re still my neighbors, though planted in Santa Barbara Cemetery up the road a piece.

I left home in 1980 and my family did not want me to go back ever. Well my mother did not want me to come home. So I made my own life and family. All these people I mention here were closer to me than my family. If you don’t have a family, you have to make up your own or hook up with other folks whose family don’t want them. That is what I did. There are others; these are just a few of my brothers and sisters from other mothers. Chris was my nephew. I never met him because I never went home. I wanted to visit them once and my mom said no, so I never met them. Now they are adults, except for Chris. He hung himself last year. I will never meet him in this life, perhaps the next, wherever that might be.
