Whenever I find myself as angry as I have been lately an old friend pops into my head, Carl Gaines. Carl was an old roommate I had almost 40 years ago at Newhouse, a sober living house here in Santa Barbara. Around 1984 or so he moved in there, I had already been there a couple years. Back then the rent was cheap and it came with the food, all one could eat. I had a lot of body space to fill. Carl was a professional weight lifter having grown up in Watts, in Los Angeles he escaped the horrors of drugs and gang life when he discovered weight lifting. I had been through it all pretty much after being sent to military school at 12 years of age as rebellious and angry as I was my young years spent on the streets or one institution or another I was always angry, Carl was very Spiritual.

So here I was living in Newhouse just after it moved from the county General Hospital Grounds near the county jail to 227 West Haley, the manager of the house called me into the office one day for a talk. He told me a new man was coming into the house he was a non-smoker who requested a non-smoking room. I smoked 2 packs of Marlboro red a day the soft pack, I carried them in my tee-shirt sleeve my tobacco was fresh and packed, locked and loaded. Everyone in the house-smoked but I agreed not to smoke in the room so this poor guy who needed to live in a sober living space could find Serenity and Peace. They did not tell me he was a Black man and at the time I was kinda racist. Later on that day I walked into my room and there was Carl Gaines, he had huge muscles looked like he could rip a man apart. I looked at him pulled out a Marlboro put it in my mouth lit it sat on my bed took a long pull and blew the smoke in Carl's face. He kinda glared at me the muscles in his face tensing up and he said: "The manager told me you were not going to smoke in the room."   "Yea I answered that was before I found out you were a 'n-word,'" only I did not say the n-word, I said the word. He says "Shit I ask for a non-smoking roommate I get the KKK."  We were friends from that time on. I put out my cigarette and did not smoke in the room.

After leaving Newhouse whenever I ran into Carl we'd have coffee or dinner. I invited him over for dinner many times he always talked about the Lord. He relied on God for all his needs though he worked. He was a Personal Trainer, he walked the talk of a true Christian he was no phony like many Christians are and any time I was angry about one thing or another he seemed to pop up out of nowhere and tell me to pray. He has been gone now for a few years, a victim of Doctor Diaz although he died of a heart attack. When I discovered he had been a patient of Dr. Diaz who was also my Doctor, I asked Dr. Diaz about him being Carl's Doctor and the doctor said to me, "I think I killed him," which really did not sink in at the time though it did later. Dr. Diaz is doing hard time now in prison. Carl is in Heaven, the other day when my anger was starting to take over I was on Facebook and saw a posting from my Nephew Ricky who is a Weightlifter he spoke of discipline and hard work in a way reminding me of Carl and suddenly Carl's face was in my head for a moment saying "Calm down pray Brother pray." Carl Gaines was a better man than I will ever be. HERE ARE YOUR SCANNER REPORTS.

Two things I miss: America before 9/11/2001 and Belinda...Will have a Good Day and remember all our loved ones. I sure hope that cyclist hit on Modoc will be okay. With so many “distracted” drivers now, riding Modoc is getting more and more risky. Drivers need to slow down, too. Citing of speeders/hand held cell phone yakkers might help somewhat.

Roger. Did you know Calvin, the black dude with who did the trick with a broom and books? Haven't seen him in ages. Any news on him?

Yes I knew Calvin could never figure out the broom game got me for 5 Bucks.. I think I read a story about him years back shinning shoes on State street I have no idea what happened to him. Carl had a heart of gold I really miss him like all my other friends I call Saints. "You better not talk about me after I'm gone as if I was a Saint." some have said, well they all are..lol I like watching the trains go through the snow old fashion steam engines too beautiful...I have no problem with those who sleep under the stars but they should clean up after themselves...Panhandlers some make a ton of money sometimes I dream of being a panhandler and raking in a few hundred too but I don't do it..I can dream.

I remember Carl but never knew he was a friend of Bill's. I worked out with him, once. Afterwards, it took me both hands to lift a glass of water. He was imposing, but very kind.

Roger, this live webcam is for people who like trains. What caught my attention is there’s a live broadcast local police scanner on it, 24/7. I though you might find it interesting. It’s in Michigan, but if you click on "Horizon Broadband", several come up for your former state, Indiana (Winona Lake and Goshen). I guess the snow will start flying there pretty soon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peC1JD9gEKc

Video here, encampments left unchecked turn into chaos and danger. Residents say homeless terrorizing San Jose neighborhood. Hoping Santa Barbara takes this seriously. The old saying, “better to stay dry than try to get dry” could be translated here to: handle problems now, not later when it’s harder.

While I realize that a great many people are in need of help, I cannot wait for the time when panhandlers stop pestering me at nearly every grocery store entrance/exit, on/offramp and even at gas stations. This constant barrage of begging is obnoxious.

The people who genuinely need help already get it from our current generous social safety net- both public and private. These people do not make pu the bulk of the problem, so now "a great many people" do not need help. A great many do scam the system and are hard core grifters. They just want help feeding their drug habits and get you to pay for it. Don't apologize for your compassion fatigue. It is well earned. We already pour millions of dollars every single into into this dead end "Homeless Ine". just in this community alone. Wasted money. Time for the new approach which will be coming from HUD and the federal level. Local efforts reached burn-out years ago. Once Casa Esperanza opened and we learned the true nature of this local "homeless" population.

It makes me sad that poor people are the ones who have to deal with scary criminal druggie campers, like in San Jose.

I was tempted to go beg for money at a freeway exit, to pay for my daughters college education. And, that's what my sign was gonna say, but I was gonna add that I'm a single working parent (which is the truth btw) !! Wonder if anyone would have given me $$$

DrVanilla, I would give you advice instead of a handout. Try a community college, the SBCC promise program, a work study program, taking the non-custodial parent to court and increase child support. Child can get a job and work their way though college. A temporary weekend job for you for this period of time. Start studying harder harder for college scholarships. Move to a lower cost area where you can afford education for your children, along with rent and overhead. Why was your only solution begging and expecting someone else to pay for your child's college education?

"Help Wanted" signs are all over Santa Barbara and Goleta. Work clothing is available at Unity Shop, and other non-profits. Some people who are actually able and willing to work every day do live in their cars, but still work. Work, and a paycheck, is the answer. If it's too expensive here, move. Get drug treatment or go to NA/AA. But, they can't be allowed to make a mess out of the environment, prey on others (especially disabled and elderly defenseless people), start fires, throw up and poop on my lawn, leave needles scattered around parks, and neighborhoods, make me afraid to go shopping. I'm old...and I thought I had seen it all...Please, authorities, put a stop to this ever growing health threat and menace.

Thanks for the info on Carl. I wondered what became of him. Sorry to hear he was taken out by Dr. Death. Carl was a kind and good man. He told me several times that he did not take steroids and that his muscular build was natural and earned by hard work at the gym, which he went to every day. I believe that he had won some recognition in the industry for all-organic body building. The Dr. Death thing throws a different slant on things but I do not know the details so I shall not judge.

L.A. "Homeless encampments overflow with dirty needles, feces, and rats, making them breeding grounds for diseases including typhus, tuberculosis, and hepatitis A. " Is Santa Barbara next? Can't we all see, it's not homelessness that's the issue, it's drug addiction and alcoholism. Solve that, solve the problem. Don't provide housing so they can CONTINUE with their addiction. Do provide housing when they get clean and sober. Housing without expectations is a burden on taxpayers.
