By Roger the Scanner Guy

As I was listening to the Scanner on WEDnesday I heard a call at Wood Glen Hall in the 3000 Block of Foothill. The call was for a Code 415pc: Disturbance, a grandson yelling at his grandfather. In all the years I have been listening to the Scanner I have never heard a call involving the Police, it is usually a Medical Call there. The Grandson was 19 years old and possibly emotionally upset. I yelled at my Grandfather too when I was 19 years old it is one of the biggest regrets in my life.

I did a lot of bad things in my young life but that to me was one of the worse. I cannot remember what it was about but I remember yelling at him saying "You don't know what it's like!!!" and him grabbing his chest as if he was having a heart attack, it was no act on his part, it shut me up. He never spoke to me again. In a few moments, I lost my Grandfather being an idiot.

Of course he knew what it was like whatever it was I was going through he experienced it all before me I was just a stupid kid. Out of everyone in our family, my Grandfather was the hardest worker working for Inland Steel for 45 Years retiring as a foreman with no sick days in 45 Years providing for our family. He got other family members and friends jobs there not many held out, my Uncle John quit after one day became a Hammond Cop and ended his career as the Chief of Police. Being a steelworker for 45 Years was easier for my Grandfather because he loved his family. I always thought of myself as the Ultimate Screw Up. I could never do anything right if it could be done wrong I'd find a way to be a complete failure that was what I thought I was best at. When I yelled at my Grandfather almost causing him to have a heart attack that was it I was the blackest sheep in the family.

I left town a couple years later joined the military which I got thrown out of a couple months later. I sobered up in 1980 and was still sober in 1984 when he passed away. Everyone including my Grandmother told me he loved me and forgave me but he never spoke to me again. I know today he would be proud of me because I never gave up and found my way. I think he was afraid of me after what I did because my real Father had a bad temper and acted on it physically toward others. Most of the family was afraid of Dear Old Dad but My Mother a Sister and I received the most beatings from him. I hope this Grandfather and Grandson work their problems out and the Grandfather speaks to his Grandson again it's a horrible thing going through your life without your Grandfather...Here are Your Scanner Reports

If drugs, alcohol or mental incompetency wasn't involved , an anger management course and/or professional counseling would potentially make this young man's future brighter.

Roger, The baking soda does work. We have always dissolved some in a little water, then you drink it.

Ever since the day after I left Cottage my guts been hurting like it did a few months ago when I spent most of the night there. When I was younger in my millennials I got real sick and had a block I couldn't go my Sister put me on a vegan runs for your life diet and I did not stop going for about 11 months or so. Sometimes I sat on the commode all night...If I take this stuff with gastritis I'll be in a world of sh%t. My blood levels are not high I do not want to take a chance right now so I agreed to a diet at this time...Thank You for your comments..

Roger - I take 500mg Metformin every evening and it only really messes with your stomach the first day or 2 after you start taking it. If you stop for a couple days, it will make you queasy when you start up again, but it's not too bad. It's kept my blood sugar down to around 100-120. Other that a little stomach issues after I started, I've had no other issues with it. Hope you feel better!

Roger. You were lucky to know a grandparent. I never met either set of my grandparents.

For stomach distress, if you're experiencing acid reflux and/or heartburn, I recommend 1/2 teaspoon (or a bit more) of baking soda. You can just spoon the baking soda into your mouth and wash it down with water. Works instantly to relieve indigestion. You can repeat every two hours with no ill effects. I have used more and hasn't been a problem.

The grandfather being yelled at was likely humiliated and it was no doubt traumatic for the other seniors living at Glen-Wood. Hope the kid gets some help as he obviously has problems. Bet he isn't allowed back to visit Gramps.

Hi Roger, I'm sorry you lost your relationship with your Boppy so abruptly. Its so wonderful that you had 19 long years to share with him before that point, it sounds like you have lots of loving memories from that time you had together.

Looking at side effects of your new medication, it seems like taking vitamin B12 might be helpful, apparently the way that it works in lowering your glucose affects your liver, and strips Vitamin B12 from your body in the process, so a common side affect is low levels of that important vitamin. Just a heads up; I know not everyone likes taking vitamins.

I hope you find new foods you like and have success in any lifestyle adjustments you need. Best of luck for taking care of yourself. You mean a lot to a lot of people, even those of us you've never met but who read your words three times a week. Thank you for all you do. Be well.
