Scanner Reports 8-21-17

Thank Dog it’s Monday. Like that? I saw that kids in hot cars thread the other day, remembering when I was a kid my mom left me in hot cars all the time. Sometimes I’d pass out, the cars were so hot. I remember looking at the dash of the car and watching the heat vapors rising off the vinyl dashboard, my eyes getting very blurry, the heat, the sweat. Why am I here? I wonder, with all the shit I survived as a kid, I really should not be here. My mom would be gone for hours shopping, trying on dresses, clothing, walking around all over the place. “Stay here I’ll be back in 10 minutes,” she’d say, and come back hours later! There was no bottled water then, no keys in the ignition. Nothing but locked doors, rolled up windows and the hot, hot, sun frying my brain. And people wonder why I’m weird.

Looking back, I remember the cars too. There was a 1958 Buick, not sure but I think it was the Electra. Then there was a 1964 Olds 98, a 1967 Buick Wildcat, a 1968 Buick Wildcat, 1963 and 1965 Rambler station wagons, a 1963 Buick Skylark, a 1960 Chevy Impala red convertible with red leather seats, a 1971 Buick Skylark. I never grew out of those cars, though they were hot as hell and cooked my brain like a microwave. I never could bring myself to buy an un-American car after I came of age. I always bought American cars with un-American parts. The last car I had was as hot in the summer sun as all the rest; a 1979 Pontiac Safari Wagon. I know that it got hotter than 110 in those cars when I was a kid, and I never even thought of leaving the car for a drink of water. A Pepsi would have been nice though. Of course those days was when sodas did not have so many additives and most fast food was real. Maybe that is why we all lived through those rough times when no one had real knowledge of how bad sitting in a hot car could be. Well at least our foods had less additives. I really would not mind having a REAL Pepsi right now.

We used to ride our bicycles through the huge white cloud of DDT from the mosquito trucks too. And I swam in the Little Calumet River, and the Saint Mary’s River in Fort Wayne. Talk about pollution! Seriously though, if you don’t want your kids ending up like Roger Dodger, don’t leave them in a hot car.
