Scanner Reports 6-17-19
By Roger the Scanner Guy
Thinking about an old friend of mine lately and wondering whatever happened to him his name was Michael I cannot remember the last name I met him in Newhouse back in 1994 or 5ish.
He was a youngin and I knew he was messed up in the head because I sponsored him for a while until he got someone else he was a good kid, he was from the Santa Maria Area in his 20's at the time I cannot remember what he did for a living but he was a tradesman. Some people might remember him because one day he was on Hollister using a pay phone when there was a huge explosion nearby one of the cottages at the Modoc Motel exploded he dropped everything and ran over to see if he could help. He and another fella pulled a woman out of what was left of the cottage she passed away a couple of days later, in fact, 2 people have killed her and her husband. I remember Michael had a rough time after that as anyone would he was around 25 years old then so he might be around 48 now getting up there in the ages weird how suddenly out of the blue you start thinking about someone, then you see them hopefully I will run into him somewhere. Last time I saw him was in early 2000;s or thereabouts he was living in Summerland got himself a pretty gal and a nice pick-up truck I hope he is doing well. If anyone knows who I'm talking shit about, and you know how he is doing let me know........Been a lot of reported burglaries lately There are always burglaries but not all are reported a friend of mine who has been here many years told me there has always been a lot of burglaries here...Where some people around here go to work, there are others that go to work in their homes. Jun 18, 2019 09:27 AMI cannot find anything about this on the internet, but I am sticking with The Brownie Motel. I drove by it the next day. The side of it was blown out and in the street. Most of the other cottages survived but it was an old, funky motel and was most likely considered a total loss.

Jun 18, 2019 10:59 AMBrownie was at Modoc and Hollister next to the train tracks. The Falls Bar was directly in front on the corner.

Jun 18, 2019 09:02 AMCorrection: It may have been the Modoc Motel. The Brownie was nearby and was torn down and I may have blended the memories. My woodshop was in a garage nearby, but my sometimes photographic memory blends images on occasion....

Jun 18, 2019 08:59 AMSome False News being reported here. The woman and her husband turned on the gas at the Brownie Motel, shot heroin and went to bed to pass out and die of suicide. They were depressed, despondent and self-destructive at that point in their lives. The husband, a friend and one-time employee of mine and one of the best finish carpenters I have ever known, woke up, forgot they were committing suicide, didn't even smell the gas and lit a cigarette. Kaboom!!! She was blown out of the building into the street where your friend and another guy happened to be walking down Hollister in the middle of the night and went to her aid. She begged them not to save her as she wanted to die, and, being a nurse for many years, was well aware of the extent of her injuries and be suffering ahead. She did not last long...I think she may have passed that night. I'm not clear on that point. I went to her funeral mass and her traumatized family seemed to have know that I was one of "his" friends, although they both were, and I felt that I might be invited out of the church with pitchforks. Addiction is a horrible disease....eats whole families before destroying the host organism. Sorry to be so blunt, especially if any of the family is reading this. The husband was blown behind the bed which saved his life, although he was badly burned. I visited him a couple of times at the Burn Unit at a hospital in Fresno. I have heard that he has been back in SB for a few years although I have not seen him. He would be fairly recognizable, being burnt bald and facially scarred. I can hardly imagine the PTSD that your friend Michael harbors from the event. It has scarred many people. May all who suffer from addiction of all types find recovery, whether they be the addict, family, friends, neighbors or society in general. In the alcoholic/addict family even the dog is sick. A rough, often fatal malady but entirely treatable. Never loose hope or stop praying. There is light at the end of the tunnel. If you seek recovery, it is the light of a new life. If you choose to keep using, it is a train coming at you....

Jun 18, 2019 12:37 PMThere was another guy NOT THE VICTIM named Michael who was on the pay phone across the street who helped pull the woman out of the wreckage...He and another guy pulled her out...The only thing I'm wrong about is the guy did not die and I had heard he did. It was day time not midnight.

Jun 18, 2019 10:52 AMActually I saved Michaels life. He was pinned to smoldering bed face up. I doused him and the bed with a hose . This was around 9;30 am . I was in the apt 90 seconds after the explosion. I was the manager at that time. Roger is wrong.

Jun 17, 2019 02:51 PMI would call a tourist either a day tripper or someone with legitimate overnight housing accommodations - paid for or an invited guest of a local with legitmate housing. (not a designated shelter). Anyone else without legitimate indoor housing would be a vagrant. Therefore, are these tourists causing all the trouble or are they vagrants. Split hairs semantically, because we do need a good definition.

Jun 17, 2019 10:30 AMWasn't there a cottage-style motel on Calle Real? The sign was an Indian chief. Unsure of the name.

Jun 18, 2019 07:46 AMI thought it was called the Modoc motel. The Modoc were a native people based in northeastern Calif, hence the image of an Indian on the sign.
