Scanner Reports 6-16-17

Supposed to be getting hot this weekend and the week coming up. Don’t be like me; drink plenty of water. It always gets about 10 degrees hotter in my place. I’ve got 2 fans. Helps, but not much. Sometimes I just hop in the shower and turn on the cold. It helps some, but then I dry off and get hot again. Rinse repeat over and over again.

First thing every morning, the police do their premises checks; the parks, East Beach, some spots in town. Lately, been hearing them check behind businesses on State Street 1100, 1200 blocks. Getting where there’s nowhere in town to sleep anymore. Heard a call, numerous tents on East Beach Thursday morning. I don’t even walk down there anymore, hurts too much. When I’m hurting, I like to sit in the sun, warms my bones a bit, don’t hurt so bad, a natural pain killer.

Didn’t sleep so well last night thinking about this guy I grew up with sort of. He hasn’t spoken to me since we were kids 50 Years or so. I sort of got him in trouble. I found an old car parked on the side of the road, 1930’s, looked like a Ford. It was kinda fixed up just sitting there by the Little Calumet River. I told Donny about it, he wanted the radio so we went to check it out. The cops caught us, let us go. Donny blamed me. Never spoke to me again. Weird, huh? I didn’t tell him to take the radio. I just showed him where the car was. What was really weird though was later on, I found this same car buried into a hillside in the neighborhood dump not too far away. I thought it was really weird. Why would someone take a perfectly good antique car and bury it in a hillside like that? Being a curious kid I figured there was a body in the trunk. I know, hell of an imagination, but I was living in Hammond, Indiana, and weird things happen there. I was born there for one. I dug out the side of the vehicle, it was half way up a 50ish foot hillside, I got the door open and got into the old car trying to pull the back seat out but it wouldn’t budge, so I did the only other thing a kid could do to bring attention to this vehicle buried. I lit a cigarette, dropped the match, and got the hell outta there. The fire department came put it out wouldn’t doubt if the car was still there. Donny never spoke to me again. I don’t think he knew what I did to that old car.

That was 50 years ago, I don’t do bad things like that anymore. Pretty much straightened up in my early 20’s, unless I drink, then LOOK OUT! I heard Donny was ill from his kid sister. One of those bad things that can take your life before your time. Spent a good deal of last night lying awake thinking about him, saying some prayers, thinking. I hope he pulls through. Almost like family growing up with those folks. Family that don’t talk to you. Which is kinda like real family. My Neighborhood family.
