Scanner Reports 4-4-18

By Roger the Scanner Guy

The beginning of the month, I’m always running around paying rent, buying food, so I usually miss calls like the airliner circling around in the channel. Those calls are scary, you don’t know what is happening if it’s going to crash, or where? Today is a weird day, woke up feeling kinda ill on top of everything else. Covered my bills then went to buynon-lethall mousey traps, then food, took a cab back cleaning up then Scanner Reports. Hope I’m not coming down with something. I got a letter from the city that a developer is going to build a 3 story Hotel right next door to where I live. Funny because I thought the address was a Historical Landmark. I remember women from some Historical group along with a photographer from the Nude Snooze Suppressed taking pictures of it years ago. It was the first Dairy in Santa Barbara or so I thought , I did not think you could build there but I guess if you have money you can do anything you want.

I’ll miss that old house, my cat was a stray over there with Old Jim Thatan when he was retired he’d sit in the yard and watch movies all day. Jim Thatan Sr. passed away over there in an RV he lived in in the back of the property, which was his property the house was split up into several apartments which were all rented out in the time. I have been here, 7 people died in that house most around the same time of suicides and overdoses. Old Jim passed away in August of 2014, 2 months later my Belinda was gone…Weird how one minute everything is going OK then suddenly everything that mattered in your life is gone. I have been through alot of crap in my life but that was the worse we were going to get married. Hopefully if I stay good I’ll be with her again. I miss the old days I miss the old Santa Barbara, the old way Good People Like Ted from Teds book store, and Jonesey walking up and down State street banging his pots and pans. I miss 3.50 Chickens at Arello’s market now Santa Cruz on West Montecito, and Picadally Square, Skandi’s Buffet on De La Vina, Queenie’s at State and Cota 40 years gone but in my memories forever.

The Alano Club at Christmas beautiful old wood floors and a real Christmas tree all lit up the old Solstices parades, Fiestas when I was young the Greek Deli at State and Ortega 2 dollars sand witches for lunch with a quart of beer all in my memory like heaven I hope that is where I go when my time comes back in the old days and old ways. Oh well I start thinking of the old days and everything else goes away I hope years from now when all these old places we live in are gone and Santa Barbara is left with 3 and 4 story hotels and condos all over the place we haunt them all that is what I would like to do. The politicians both democrat and republican are fighting over Heaven and who’s going to HELL. Fine with me this is my heaven Me, Belinda and the kitties will stay here in Purgatory scare the hell out of wealthy people in these condo’s here…I mean who would not want to spend eternity here in Santa Barbara? Sure would be better than spending eternity with a bunch of crappy old farts that want to take over the world. Will Anyway Here is your Scanner Reports…

  1. In the old Santa Barbara we remember, Roger, what comes to my mind is that song with the refrain, “Those were the days, my friend, we thought they’d never end”. I like Piccadilly Square, but even more I liked Ott’s that was there before. Closest, at one time, to a “department” store in SB. Walk down the center isle and sports clothing section to the right (plaid skirts and jackets, etc) china to the left, and on, and on to the back toy department.
