Scanner Reports 3-30-18

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Will I was on that other website the otter day it’s the one everyone goes to that have no life anymore, they just sit and talks to all their friends there most of which they have never met, FACEBOOK that’s the one. I saw something about the program I was in back in the 70’s, it started in New Jersey then spread across the U.S. in an attempt to scare kids Straight and keep them from going to prison, Scared Straight. I believe it was 1974 when I went, us kids were paid by CETA to go spend a whole Saturday there. I think we all got about 60 Bucks each to go, I might be wrong on the money, (60 Bucks was a lot then.) But that is what I recall.

We went to Terre Haute prison in Indiana. We sat in an audience while several lifers told us their stories, then we were matched one on one with inmates who told us their stories. We were also shown pictures in black and white, not color, of inmate murders and suicides. None of that shit got to me, though most of the time I was sitting there I was thinking about what I was going to do with the money when I got paid. It was twenty bucks for an ounce of weed back then, under 5 bucks for a carton of Marlboros, and beer was real cheap. Although the Boys home I was in was close to a “Liquor is Quicker” warehouse, one of the neighborHOOD Gangs broke into the warehouse all the time and sold us the BOOZE cheap.

Though I did not want to EVER go to prison I thought that sooner than later. I was going there because I was meant to go there, violence was in my blood beaten into me at a young age, ingrained. A group of folks were talking about how Scared Straight never really worked because most of the kids in the program continued committing crimes though the crimes that were committed were not as serious as before. I guess this group did not study our group because some of our kids went on to commit some really horrible crimes. I too continued committing crimes but only under the influence of alcohol. There was a combination of things for me that helped me go straight, one of those was being inside of that prison and seeing the entrance of the populated area the Jail Bars from the floor to the ceiling close together no hope bleak, black, darkness of lost souls that might never see daylight again unforgiven, death row the visual of that place that one part of the prison exists in my mind as if it was planted there. It is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of breaking the law, and just that picture in my mind stops me in my tracks. So one small part of my experience of Scared Straight works for me One Day at a Time, one minute, one second like other things…New House 2 The House on the Hill, my saving grace and AA though I know longer go the good is ingrained in me where the violence once was. I wake up in the morning, not come to and freely come and go without having to look over my shoulder sit outside under the Sun warming my heart I feel love where hate once lived.
