By Roger the Scanner Guy

The other day I was crossing in the crosswalk having the right of way when suddenly and without warning a 1995 White Dodge Ram pickup extended bed with a cowboy behind the wheel lunged toward me. I jumped back and yelled my favorite cuss word, he continued on driving through the left hand turning lane on Milpas, had anyone been there he woulda hit them. I said a couple choice words, I had every right since this guy chose to try and take me out in the crosswalk for whatever reason. I gave him a little hand gesture down the street as he jumped on the 101 Southbound, not the middle finger. Na I got a little more class than that. I gave him the "Little Weenie Big Truck" salute.

The next day Saturday he was sitting in the Hamburger Habit parking lot watching me from the lot. I just looked back at him. I don't know what his problem is I don't know the guy. I don't know if he was drunk or under the influence of drugs or hates old people or knows I'm Roger Dodger and wanted to run me over so all his friends will buy him drinks till Midnight on UNhappy Hour. I did not do a damn thing to deserve when he did.  It was a cheap shot at a crippled guy that cannot run across the street anymore or get out of the way of a 3,000-pound vehicle before being splattered all over a crosswalk. Kinda like that other cheap shot getting down on my shit for taking free money for being disabled. Hey trade places with me you can have it all: complications of meningitis, neuropathy, permanent nerve damage, the possibility of losing one or both of your legs and possible M.S. Yes you have that free cash and sit on your ass too try to cross streets with drunkin manics trying to run you over! 700 Bucks a month all yours!  It doesn't matter that though I had many, many jobs I paid into the system for 30 years but that doesn't matter. Take my disablity and shove it, I'd rather WORK! That little mention about the Silly Council wanting to cut off alcohol sales at midnight, it might be a good idea I know the drunks might not think so but most of the crimes committed in our town are committed by drunk people. The houseless would get to sleep earlier not be wandering around till the wee hours, Cottage hospital would not be as full you can still drink at home jus saying.

Roger, You are not getting "free money", you are basically earning it with all your health problems that make you disabled. You'd gladly work if you could trade off the impairments for a stronger body.

Thanks FLICKA very nice of you to say some people in this town don't know what the hell work is until they become disabled.

Beautifully written, Roger. I concur. Gratitude to you for stating, "Hey trade places with me you can have it all." And gratitude for your statement, "It doesn't matter that though I had many, many jobs I paid into the system for 30 years but that doesn't matter. Take my disablity and shove it, I'd rather WORK!"
As, most assuredly, would I. Although I labored and worked and paid heavily into the systems for decades, a compassionate employee of the government disability offices inevitably explained to me that 'you pretty much have to be down to your last dime to qualify.' I paid in tons – I don't draw an ounce. Surprise.
I contributed tons to well regarded charitable organizations providing housing, food, healthcare, caregiver support, medical research, and the like. Since being ill, I was taken advantage of by the most surprising people; by ordinary, everyday, nice people. I was driven from the residence I owned in Santa Barbara. I was harassed by a malign personality disordered individual in power in an HOA. Shivers at the recollection. I sing a song from "The Wizard of Oz" dedicated to the witch. Hundreds of thousands burned for no good result for me. A special thanks to the Santa Barbara courts for that. Surprise.
Since then, two rented residences. The first, chronic sewer back-ups into the living space. Oughtta be against laws and customs. A nightmarish concierge move gone horribly wrong. The second neglected, it poisoned and sickened me far worse than I was. Oughtta be against laws and customs. Now onto a third. It's devastating to move household when one is very, very ill. Surprise.
My illness is due to no fault of my own. A *good looking, robustly strong and active individual up until becoming ill, I'd exercised conscientiously, faithfully, and rigorously. Respectful of my physical being, I was never a smoker; never a drugger; was only an occasional imbiber of alcohol (had none for many years); didn’t engage in risky activities; volunteered informally to benefit my neighbors throughout my life.
Social Security doesn't reflect proper recordation of all of my employment. Odd, because the IRS unfailingly received payments resulting from the work that’s unrecognized by Social Security. The one doesn’t consult the other. Surprise.
Listen up you healthy-enough to hold jobs peoples of the US, because you’ve the same pending. It’s on lay-away in Your Name. Be fitfully assured, it’s in store for You. Count on it. You will cease being productive = you’re worthless + you’re invisible. Invisible, unless the disease process that has You wreaks an alteration upon your physical appearance warranting disdain. You get slow = loathing of you. You get obese = *repugnance of you. You get hoary gray = disgust of you. Surprise.
You suppose that you continue being the one-and-the-same Someone who you were, but no one *looking at you supposes you’d been “very successful”, meaning worthy of respect. The fairy tale recitation plays in the onlookers heads, “you must have done something bad to deserve your lowly state-of-being. You brought this on yourself”. No. Surprise.
The heavily politically propagandized, individual to You, safety nets of lux government distributed monies are fairy tales. Because first, you must be bankrupted by doctoring and prejudicing, by “health-caring” and health insuring, and by taxes. All of that, plus the aforementioned malign vulture-ing, will see bankruptcy accomplished. Then second, you must fight through thickets of nigh impenetrable red tape. Finally, third, debased, you receive a poverty level, trickling down of pennies in exchange for all of your decades of striving & diligence; for all of your years of over-attendance; for all of your contributed ingenuity, ideation, creation, & production. Surprise.

This foggy weather isn't going to give you much relief, Roger. Dry weather is better for decreasing body pains. But, remember, this, too, shall pass. Find something good about each moment, dear Roger.
