Scam Calls Use 805 Area Code

Source: Santa Barbara Police Department
The Santa Barbara Police Property Crimes Unit would like to remind its citizens to be cautious of various phone scams that occur daily throughout our nation. These scams are often internationally based, however will represent a local area code using caller identification spoofing applications. These scam artists often prey on unsuspecting citizens and are persistent with their questions and threats.
Recently, a report was submitted by a concerned citizen of a scam in which the caller claimed to be a representative for the Social Security Administration and deceitfully claimed she was working with an officer with the Santa Barbara Police Department. The caller was able to identify the incident as a scam and ended the phone call.
Please be mindful of such scams and please do not disclose financial information, social security numbers, addresses, or other personal identifying information unless the caller can be verified through other means.

Jun 29, 2019 10:00 PMD8VANILLA, We also got a call recently showing our home #. One time I pressed redial on a local # I didn't pick up on, it was a disconnected phone. The dang credit offer to reduce our interest rates keeps coming in (we pay the day after the bill comes, never had any interest). I pressed the "number one" to get a live person to tell them to take us off their call list. I barely started the sentence when the person hung up. 15 minutes later I got another call from them and got another rude hang up.

Jun 29, 2019 06:02 PMI have a very effective way of dealing with this scum. If I am not in my office where I can see the caller ID and ignore the call, I pick up the phone and don't say anything. If it is a scam, after about 5-10 seconds, they hang up. No words are exchanged. If more than 10 seconds have elapsed without a hangup, I say "speak". Oftentimes, nothing, and I hang up. If it is somebody I know, they respond and we have a conversation. One word I NEVER use is "yes", since they record you saying 'yes' in your own voice and then use that recorded 'yes' to order things on the Internet.

Jun 29, 2019 12:49 PMI just got a call from 800-743-5000. The guy said his name was something Rodriguez, and he was with PG&E. He said he had a disconnect order for my electric meter, and gave me the address of my shop. I told him that SCE supplied my electricity, and I don't have a separate meter from about twenty other tenants, and that he was full of fecal matter. Sort of.

Jul 02, 2019 08:31 AMThe best way to get your phone number and name is to buy stolen account information on the dark web. And the most common source for the dark web to get this information is from corporate data breaches.

Jul 01, 2019 10:32 AMAnd now they know that you receive service from SCE and don't have a separate meter. See how nefarious these calls are? They will use that information on the next call to seem more legit.

Jun 29, 2019 07:52 AMThis can only be stopped--OK heavily abate--if the communication conglomerates decide to act in concert on something besides rates.

Jun 29, 2019 10:29 AMI am now getting at least 3-5 calls a day from numbers unknown to me, which I will not answer; sometimes a message, or part of message, is left on my voice mail as part of the scam. Some of the free or pay blocking services will help ( acouple of them mentioned already in this thread), but only in a limited fashion. The technology to permanently block and end all scam calls exists according to Consumer Reports and other sources, but the communication companies don't want to pay for it. The FCC really needs to step in and tackle this rapidly increasing, irritating, and potentially harmful problem. I'd urge everyone to write a letter to the FCC and their phone service and demand an end to this once and for all.

Jun 28, 2019 10:33 AMJust signed up with nomorobo with great success recently. Its a service that Cox offers with their service but I think you can get it on ios and samsung for your cell. The service blocks robocalls and telemarketing calls to both your home phone and cell phones. I would typically get 2 a day but for the past 3 weeks Ive only received one in total.

Jun 28, 2019 09:27 AMI got a scammer call yesterday, and MY own cell phone # showed up on my cell phone caller ID!!!!!! I usually will call the number back, but make my # private, by putting the *67 first. Then, I might be able to find out if the number THEY are calling from is legit. The newest scammer # , shows up as coming from the Apple Stores..... it's tricky, because that # is real, but if you follow the scammer calls instructions, they direct you to a person......and, I'm sure they will scam you into something........ Apple stores said they are having a lot of problems with that fake scammer call....
