SBPD Dispels National Guard Rumor

By edhat staff

The Santa Barbara Police Department is confirming a letter announcing the mobilization of the National Guard is fake.

The department became aware of a letter circulating throughout the community that appeared to be from the National Guard warning of a federally imposed quarantine of two weeks.  The letter stated the National Guard will close all businesses and require residents to stay in their homes to envoke the “Stafford Act.”

“The Santa Barbara Police Department has reached out to the California National Guard and the California Office of Emergency Services — both agencies deem the letter FAKE,” stated Public Information Officer Anthony Wagner.

A copy of the fake letter is provided below:

  1. Telltale signs it’s a fake: all the errors. Improper grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spacing. The word “evoke” instead of the intended “invoke”. Plus, what formal document ends with “Please forward to your family/friends?” Just someone putting the false scare out there to rile people up.
