A Fish and Game Officer in Los Padres National Forest had a close call a century ago while patrolling on horseback. His horse suddenly landed in a quicksand bog and sank up to its breast, and the officer had to cut the saddle off the horse to help it get out of the deep mud. As he stepped back after all this, the officer was surprised to see a large bear nearby – who was just as surprised. Fortunately, this adventure had a happy ending for all involved. – Santa Barbara Daily News, May 3, 1926
