Rapid rainfall caused flooding one night in April 1926 in a number of areas in our fair city. East of Santa Barbara High School, several people whose homes were surrounded by water had to be rescued by rowboats.
In another area of town, “Tourists residing in the two autocamps on Hollister Avenue [upper State Street], were routed out of their house this morning by police when the waters of Mission Creek threatened to break over the banks. The persons loaded their traveling equipment and possessions into their automobiles hurriedly and left for high ground.” – Santa Barbara Morning Press, April 5, 1926
Even the visiting circus was affected by the flooding. Circuses usually set up their tents in the area now known as the Funk Zone, but because of the rain, they moved their show to Pershing Park.
