Next Step: CSEA Membership Ratification and Board of Trustees Approval
This is Santa Barbara Unified School District’s (SBUSD) final Negotiations Update for successor contract negotiations with the California School Employee Association (CSEA).
SB Unified and CSEA Concludes Successor Negotiations with a Three-Year Contract
[Wednesday’s] session finalized all tentative agreements for wages. The term of the contract will last July 1, 2024- June 30, 2027. This will be a closed contract with no negotiations for the first two years.
Both negotiation teams expressed appreciation for the work they did together settling 19 of the 43 articles that exist in the current contract. This collaborative work will impact the wages, benefits, and working conditions of classified employees for years to come.
Next Step:
CSEA Chapter 37 membership will now have all of its members vote to approve the Tentative Agreements. Then, the Board of Trustees will also need to approve the agreements in order for them to take effect. We anticipate the agreements going to the Board for approval on September 10th.

BASIC – “So far from the standard, time-proven educational philosophy.” – Oh, you mean the educational philosophy that was applied to “educating” people like you? Yeah…. “proven” indeed BWAHAHA!
And really? What’s so “SB modern-woke” (what even is that?) about that very benign and hopeful motto on the screen?
“We prepare students for a world yet to be created.”
“WHHHAAAA…. iT’s wOKe!”
No, Simon, it’s common freakin’ sense. The world in which today’s students will live doesn’t yet exist, because you know…. TIME.
You are absolutely obsessed with SB and “wokeness” lately. If you hate empathetic, intelligent and caring people so much, you might want to move. It’s kind of our thing here around
I’m guessing you’re the type that likes the addition of break dancing to the Olympics too, Sac. Right?
You’re over your ten post a day limit bud. Unless you’re trying for a new personal record.
And please, do explain to us, what is so “far from the standard, time-proven educational philosophy” about this?
How does preparing kids for the future deviate from the educational “philosophy” of the past? Is that not what all teachers since the dawn of humankind have strived to do?
Honestly, I’m serious here, what are your thoughts? Can you explain how preparing students for adulthood in a future different from our present (as all futures are) is a bad thing?
Start with what are ESSENTIAL skills – reading, writing, math! We’re really lagging in as a state. Curricula have gotten away from basic skills in favor of what appear to be trendy touchy-feely socially- and politically-motivated topics and talking points.
If kids can’t read, write, and communicate well – all the rest is useless.
BASIC – reading, writing, math alone will not prepare kids for the future. Schools are there to create well-rounded young adults who are able to compete and thrive in the future.
What are these “trendy touchy-feely socially- and politically-motivated topics and talking points?” Science? Art? Foreign languages? Computer skills? History? Social awareness? What?
All the “woke” topics you all are so afraid of makes our kids better humans. Success as an adult requires an understanding of our history and culture and the ability to look at life from others’ points of view without instantly shutting them down due to fear, ignorance and prejudice.
I disagree with you. I don’t think our schools are educating our kids well currently because they’ve gotten away from educating them in very simple ways that will help them get jobs and careers in their futures, no matter what path they take. Feel free to rant on and on….
Jeez, kinda hard to actually converse here today…
One last shot though. What is wrong with this motto? Preparing kids for the changing world is the fundamental goal of education since well….. forever. You keep saying “reading, writing, math,” but that alone doesn’t equip our kids for the complex jobs and interactions of the future or adulthood in general. I get you disagree with me (surprise, surprise), but can you at least acknowledge that schools need to teach more than 3 subjects? Kids should be challenged with new ways of thinking as well. That’s critical. That’s why we have history class, languages, science, all that stuff.
I just don’t think a departure from the arts, sciences, etc will improve our nation’s education or adequately prepare kids for the future.
Of course they need multiple SUBJECTS, not just those 3! So ultra-literal and ultra-liberal, you are! Language, social studies, history, Econ, art, music etc are essential too as they always have been. The point is to have kids learning the basic SKILLS (reading, writing, math) with quality teaching rather than plopping them on iPads as a substitute for a teacher, and wasting their time doing assemblies for DEI and school spirit presentations. It’s a thing now, and it’s diluting the already limited time kids spend actually learning in the classroom. I think our local school system under Hilda is really suffering. She’s terrible for our students and teachers. The School Board needs a reset too. They’re a big part of the problem.
Wow, that was the group holding our kids’ education hostage all summer. I weep for the future.
You gotta love Hilda’s motto in the background too. wtf?! So classic SB modern-woke. So far from the standard, time-proven educational philosophy. And it’s failing.
BASIC – what’s wrong with breakdancing? Like wth? Dude…. get a grip.
More on point though, what’s your beef with kids learning diversity, equity and inclusion? Why are you so vehemently against anything that has to do with thinking of others and general empathy? Such a weird and hateful way to live life man.
So much more pleasant just letting others live life happily and not being furious about new things.
I knew it! So why not throw in line-dancing? How about ballet? How about Fishing? Maybe riding a tricycle through some cones? Breakdancing isn’t a real sport worthy of the Olympic standard, in my opinion. But obviously some disagree. They’re experimenting, and you’re taking the bait. Anything goes! Hey, no biggie – watch the breakers do their thing if you like, yo.
The role of schools isn’t to teach our kids those things. Those are all important concepts that we learn at home and with regular social interaction as kids, especially amongst our peers. Most of all it’s parenting. No teacher is going to teach those concepts in a classroom. I think it’s foolish to think so.
Who the eff cares what sports other people enjoy competing in? Are you being affected in any way? No, of course not. Not like you’re an athlete anyway who’s losing a spot on a team or something. Stop shitting on people doing things that make them happy and do NOTHING to affect you. It’s tragically childish and just lame.
No teachers teach Diversity class or Equity class. It’s a concept taught within classes such as US History, social studies, ethnic studies, etc…
Again, we all know you don’t give a rat’s about other peoples’ feelings or troubles, but a good citizen does and that’s what we’re trying to teach our children. Or at least we should be.
Just because you’re miserable and hate anyone doing anything you don’t like, doesn’t mean the rest of the world can’t be happy. Leave people to live their lives. IT IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.
