Santa Ynez River was running bank to bank at Robinson Bridge. Highway 246 was closed east of town. (scroll through the above photos)

At H Street, normally home to a significant homeless encampment, the river was running rapidly. Farm fields west of town were flooded and overflow from the fields at Central and Floradale was running into neighboring fields.

I hope the homeless were able to get out safely with as much of their belongings as possible! Does the City/County go and warn riverbed homeless camps about flooding? They should!

Great to see the river like this! Looking forward to some fishing this spring!

Sacjon - I live across the street from the riverbed in Santa Maria, near the 166. I can assure you that the homeless have been warned. We have had a helicopter fly overhead with a bull horn yelling to go to higher grounds, park rangers riding all around the riverbed doing the same, today PGE is out there telling the homeless to move out, the local police are riding in big trucks and on motorcycles, giving warnings. This has been going on for the past two weeks, not just yesterday and today. The entry gates are padlocked, yet they have cut huge holes in the fences. Even today with power lines down, some homeless are still refusing to move. You can only do so much.

I thought I read somewhere that first responders rescued a premature newborn and mother from the middle of the river...

Most of their stuff was probably left behind and is now in the ocean or snagged up on trees and bushes in the riverbed.

Yes, there have been helicopters flying around the river bed with loudspeakers. I first saw/heard one on Jan 3rd, but they may have been flying around prior to that (I had been out of town for 5 days). I hope they made it out safe. Aside from that, seeing the river flowing freely and wildly like that is really neat to see. Last I recall seeing anything close to that was in the 90s. Also worth the few miles drive to Surf beach to see it flowing out into the ocean.

Many homeless people aren't among the most functional, rational or even sane population. Those who are, moved up and went to shelters. Those who were out of it on drugs or alcohol were lucky to get out with their lives.

3 were in the riverbed after the rescue of the newborn & adults. Rescuers arrived and only 1 of the 3 left with the rescuers.

In 1968 or so there was one of these floods way down in the Lompoc Valley...the willows and other trees, etc. washed down to the mouth of the river, then the waves washed this onshore which created a huge beaver-dam sorta thing...such that the water backed up even more into the fields. The fields in the lower valley were all under water, quite a sight. Walking along the huge "beaver dam" on the seashore I found some ancient small bottles, some with corks still in them, from the early pioneer farms in the valley, that were unearthed and washed to the seashore...
