Today 3:22 P.M. Officers responded to the report of multiple shots fired in the area of 800 N. Bradley. Officers arrived and found two adult males suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The Santa Maria Fire Department, American Medical Response, and Cal Star Air Ambulance provided aid and transported the victims to local medical centers.

Witnesses identified the shooter as Robert D. Ruiz (DOB 12-28-82). Officers within minutes located Ruiz in the 400 Block of W. Bunny exiting a vehicle parked in the driveway of a residence. The uniformed patrol officer immediately confronted Ruiz and took him into custody. A second occupant had been seen in the vehicle and the lone officer waited for additional units to arrive to confront the second suspect. It was believed the second suspect had exited the vehicle and gone into the home. After waiting for a search warrant, officer made entry to the residence and discovered the second suspect had not gone into the home, but had fled on foot from the area.
The investigation is ongoing and detectives are working to locate the outstanding suspect. No booking photo of the suspect is going to be released at this time as photo lineups with witnesses are still taking place.

During the W. Bunny operation the California Highway Patrol responded with a helicopter to assist officers and ensure the safety of the other members of the community in the area.

Both victims are in serious condition. This incident does not appear to be gang related.

  1. The conflicts among these gangs amounts to internicene warfare and are expensive. Perhaps there should be programs to learn how to be their own medics, so they could patch up their own combatants at the expense of their own time and money. To be merciful, they could be allowed to transport ones that would die otherwise to the nearest ER.
