On the evening of July 11, 2025, at approximately 7:30 PM, officers from the Santa Maria Police Department’s Gang Suppression Team conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Morrison and Oakley Streets.
During the investigation, officers discovered that the driver, a 22-year-old male Santa Maria resident, was in possession of a loaded firearm.
The individual was arrested without incident and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on weapon-related charges.

Bad guys should not carry loaded guns in their cars.
But was this search conducted within the confines of the rule of law? Did the officers have a search warrant? Or did they just ask the man whether they could search his car and he consented, not knowing that he had the right to refuse?
Law enforcement agencies should make clear the circumstances of the search when they issue a press release like this.
