Santa Maria Man Arrested for Vandalism and Attempted Assault

By the Santa Maria Police Department

Case #SMPD23-0004978
On Sunday, May 7, 2023, at approximately 0830 hours, Santa Maria Police Officers responded to a call for service of a man acting erratically, vandalizing residences, and attempting to burglarize vehicles. The man was later identified as 21-year-old Santa Maria Resident Samuel Santiago-Francisco.

Francisco was contacted by officers in the 300 block of W. Tunnell St, with a long piece of rebar in his hand that he was using to damage property. As officers contacted Francisco, they repeatedly asked Francisco to drop the weapon. Francisco ignored the officer’s requests and raised the rebar over his head and began walking towards the officers. It was later determined Francisco was under the influence of a controlled substance.

Officers on scene used less lethal impact devices to subdue Francisco and take him into custody without incident. Francisco is facing charges of vandalism, under the influence of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
