In response to a recent bombing at the Santa Maria Courthouse, the City of Santa Maria has announced new security measures to ensure the safety of public meetings.
Starting Tuesday, October 1st, all bags, backpacks, and personal belongings will be subject to an administrative search before entry is allowed into City Hall Council Chambers for City Council meetings.
This decision comes in the wake of a shocking event where Nathaniel James McGuire, a 20-year-old Santa Maria man, was charged with federal crimes for causing an explosion at the Santa Maria Courthouse. The attack left at least five individuals injured and raised serious concerns about public safety.
McGuire was apprehended shortly after the incident, which occurred when he placed an explosive bag in the courthouse lobby on September 25th. Investigations following his arrest revealed McGuire possessed a large cache of weapons, including a shotgun, a rifle, ammunition, a suspected bomb, and 10 Molotov cocktails, escalating worries about potential future attacks.
The City’s proactive measure aims to prevent similar tragic incidents and reassure the community about their safety during city council gatherings.
