The Santa Maria Fire Department (SMFD) was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 800 block of South Depot Street on Thursday, bringing a substantial response to combat the blaze.
The vacant building, whose flames were seen by nearby residents, prompted a multi-engine effort to control the situation.
Engines 1, 2, 3, and 4, along with Truck 1 and Battalion Chief 2, worked in unison to tackle the fire. Officers from the Santa Maria Police Department and personnel from American Medical Response also responded to the call to provide assistance and ensure public safety.
Concerns over city safety were mitigated as Cal Fire stepped in to provide city coverage while SMFD crews concentrated their efforts on the fire. The swift inter-service cooperation ensured that the rest of Santa Maria remained protected while firefighters focused on the emergency at hand.
Though no civilians or firefighters were reported injured, the building, unoccupied at the time, suffered fire damage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by authorities. The vacancy of the structure helped to avoid potential casualties and the rapid response by SMFD limited potential fire spread, highlighting the importance of diligent emergency services even in unpopulated buildings.
The Santa Maria Fire Department has not yet provided details on the extent of the damage, and it is unclear if the structure was equipped with working smoke alarms or fire control systems.
More details will be available as the investigation progresses.
