Santa Barbara Unified School District Board of Education adopted a call to climate change action resolution at the January 15, 2019 school board meeting. The resolution recognizes that climate change is a social justice and equity issue that impacts all people and disproportionately young people. It also affirms the belief that students and teachers can positively shape a world that is yet to be created, environmentally and sustainably.

“As we experienced tragically a year ago, climate change is already impacting our community, our schools, our students and their futures,” said Laura Capps, Vice President of the Board of Education who brought the measure forward. “The climate crisis is daunting, yet we are committed to doing our part in each and every school – while teaching the next generation environmental education and climate science. And we’re proud to join other school boards across the country in a collective call to action for Congress to make progress on climate.”

The school board affirmed their support for existing districtwide environmental and sustainable initiatives that include: kindergarten through 12th grade environmental education and climate science efforts, facility projects that incorporate solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations, climate friendly food service that increases plant-based menu offerings and food waste reduction programs, LED lighting, and the establishment of a Sustainability Sub-Committee as part of the districtwide Wellness Committee.

The district will share its commitment to climate change action with Santa Barbara County Office of Education, State Superintendent of Education, California State Board of Education, Congressional Climate Solutions Caucus, California State School Board Association, National School Board Association, State and National representatives in Sacramento and Washington D.C., and the Schools for Climate Action campaign.

  1. This is political indoctrination in touchy-feely wrapping for young minds. They probably will not cover how the sensational projections from the 1980s did not happen. By 2018 at the latest, the Arctic was supposed to be ice free in the summer by multiple experts in the early 2000s. There were not 200 million environmental refugees by 2008 as postulated by the UN. Snow did not become a rare and exciting event as postulated by Dr. David Viner of CRU in East Anglia . It looks like will not have one billion CO2 induced famine deaths by 2020 postulated by Dr. James Holdren in 1987. Students will be encouraged to reports their parents who dissent…

  2. I am glad to read this. At the recent hearing re the AERA steam drilling project, the students from UCSB came prepared with facts and figures to address the inadequacies in the Draft EIR. AERA had their paid minions there raving about the wonderful work of AERA. The usual shills, Caldwell and Armendiriz, could not compete with these young people. I left there thinking we might be in good hands with the next generation. As one student said, he thought he was at a stockholders’ meeting instead of an EIR hearing. Students need to be grounded in facts and need a strong science background. Shasta guy and his ilk would rather bury their heads in a barrel of oil. SB County couldn’t even make its emission goals, unlike most of the state. Good work, SB, to prepare students who are educated in facts and science, not corporate propaganda.

  3. Sea Dog is a grand example of someone who parrots words and phrases from the denier camp, but has no idea about the facts or physical processes behind the issue. We are not in any sort of grand solar minimum, and even if we were, the effects of the solar magnetic cycle are minuscule (though detectable) compared to the huge carbon dioxide forcing of the climate.

  4. Cant fire the school administrators because someone has to carry out all the teacher protection statutes in the 48,000 section Ed Code, written into law by the teachers unions and our “education” legislators like Hannah-Beth Jackson, now referred to as “their” legislstion in her latest bout of total lunacy. No more binary ‘he’s and shes” – it is now only to be referred to according to HB Jackson fiat – they or theirs. Singulars become automatic plurals. Jane is going on a vacation – they are going on a vacation.

  5. Now they want “universal pre-school” – everyone under the age of five has to be snatched from their parents homes and stuck into state brainwashing centers, which will of course only coincidentally hire thousands of new teacher union members. Why did you vote for these people?

  6. ahh … but each parent will still be driving their kids to the grade schools and middle schools and the older kids will still be driving to high school. It’s always someone else that has to change their ways. When I see the student parking lots at the high schools empty as the students kids are all riding bikes, walking or taking buses … when I see no lines of cars at the grade schools and middle schools as the kids reject mom and dad driving them and insist on walking, biking and busing then I’ll believe that a change will come. I can’t help but recall how the baby boomers were going to reject oil, cars, war toys, violence and etc. and upon reaching maturity failed miserably at living up to what they had protested. “Ahh but I was so much older then I’m younger than that now.”

  7. I am glad that the students are participating and agree with, “Students need to be grounded in facts and need a strong science background.” As a public official, a school board member, Capps needs to speak carefully: It is not fact that last year’s debris flow in Montecito was a result of climate change any more than was 1969’s or the one hundreds of years ago in present day Rocky Nook Park. …That said, a changing climate is real and it is critically important that students understand the environment in which we live and help preserve a healthy ecosystem for all creatures, including ourselves. Towards that end (and obvious others) it is critically important that ALL students meet the highest standards for language and math/sciences knowledge.

  8. The earth has been warming since the end of the Ice Age, 10,000 years ago. Do you want another Ice Age to stop this normal warming period. It was pretty brutal. Look at a map of the extent of the Ice sheets, mass migrations and the debris piles they left behind.

  9. Mrs Martin in the second grade did not need “support” to teach math. She just taught it. Mrs Brady in the 4th grade drilled us in multiplication tables too on her own. Maybe with the help of some flash cards. Which we made out of colored construction paper. The biggest math lesson teachers need is what the heck are their unions doing with the $16.000 per student the schools now get, and why do the schools always claim they have no money. Prop 98 – bond issues – parcel taxes- Prop 30 – Local Control Funding. Plus Calif teachers unions turned down federal Race to the Top funds from Obama because it required student outcomes to be part of teacher evaluations. California teachers were the only state in the Nation to turn down that Obama cash for schools. Now they complain, they don’t have enough money and are funded less than other states are, who took the money. You do not want these people, these teacher unions members, to go any where near your children

  10. General Tree: Here’s the Arctic Sea Ice Volume and Thickness from the Danish Meteorological Institute for yesterday. The DMI keeps track of this daily. They also keep track of Greenland which you can access on other parts of the website. You can scroll the charts back to 2003. Presently the Arctic sea ice volume is recovering and approaching the 2004-2013 mean values. This is seen in the inset chart on the upper right. x x

  11. Yes Santabararaobserver, The Balkanization of American Society has progressed to a point where Free Speech is virtually mute. Rednecks, Snowflakes, etc all being dumbed down to adversarial knee-jack responses without capacity to entertain and respect the views of others. ……divided we fall.

  12. Suggestions to Edhat re excessive down-voting: 1) Don’t automatically hide comments which have “too many” negative votes, 2) Keep all comments visible, 3). Allow users to sort comments by best, worst, oldest, newest
