We’re delighted to announce the theme for the 2021 Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Celebration:  BLOOM!

CALL TO ARTISTS FOR POSTER AND T-SHIRT DESIGN:

We wonder what our fantastic community of artists will bloom up to illustrate our theme!

A $250 honorarium will be awarded to the artist whose work is selected to be featured on 2021 Solstice t-shirts and posters.

We’re always on the lookout for new talent. Even if, ESPECIALLY if, you’ve never proposed a design for our collectable posters and T-shirts, it’s time to give it your best shot! This could be your year to shine!

An exhibit of submissions will be shown via Facebook for the public to vote. A community panel will select the 2021 featured artist by mid April.

Guidelines

1.         Up to 3 images in jpeg form (72 dpi) to be emailed to [email protected] by March 29 at 5 PM for consideration.

2.         Works are encouraged to support the theme: "Bloom", though all artwork submitted    will be considered.

3.         Artists must own the work and or have rights to reproduce the work if it has already been sold.

4.         Works submitted must be suitable for Summer Solstice Celebration marketing materials. We reserve the right to be selective about works submitted and exhibited.

5.         After the selection process is complete, a $250 check will be awarded to the artist for work selected to represent Solstice 2021 in t-shirts, posters and in all marketing        materials.

6.         Two t-shirts and two posters will be awarded to the artist, plus a write up on the Solstice      website, a press release, inclusion in e-newsletter and social media.

Hey guys, take it easy. I think we all know the Solstice Parade shouldn't happen this year. That's is unless Murillo and Das wa t to head it up - he can go in the hornet costume.

Well...it would be nice it they WANTED something more useful. Oh, say like a thriving economy in Santa Barbara, and garbage not being strewn about by vagrants, instead of WANTING a bunch of hippies flittering about the ghost town that once was a beautiful city.

SACK - As I read through most of the comments, it seems that most people are trying to find a way to still have this little freak show. Talking about Pershing Park and Cabrillo? The State Street Promenade? La Conchita to Girsh Park? I think you do have difficulty reading.

CWAZNY - Am I really the one with a reading difficulty here? The whole point of most of these comments is that the parade is cancelled. That means, I'll say it slowly for you.... no..... "freaks"..... get..... to....... "run around"....... ANYWHERE. Good gravy Lazny, you should read more.

Okay dyslexic one. Why do these freaks get to run around unabated, when everyone else is in some state imposed lock-down? It's just a waste of time giving this kind of thing any attention, when State Street businesses are closing by the day. I guess closed businesses will make a nice backdrop for the weirdo parade photos. And, it's W-A-Z-N-Y.

CWANZY - yeah, happy joyous, peaceful people ruin everything, don't they? You and GETOFFMYLAWN should hang out sometime at a park and yell at kids for laughing.

Definitely can be done with social distancing. Let's say there are 50,000 people watching the parade. Half on one side of the street (25,000) and half on the opposite side of the street (25,000). Now, let's space them apart by six feet (25,000 x 6 = 150,000 feet). 150,000/5280 (feet in a mile) = 28.5 miles .....if you start the parade in La Conchita, through Carp, Summerland, Montecito, Cabrillo Blvd, and then State/Hollister to Girsh Park. If there are more people, then there's always 101 up to El Capitan or Gaviota or Santa Maria.....

It's wonderful that so many people enjoy the Solstice Celebration Parade to the extent that they have suggestions on how to execute it (or to avoid it) in these uncertain times. Unfortunately, it's precisely because of the times being uncertain that it is necessary to find an alternative way to celebrate the arrival of summer in Santa Barbara. While the parade may seem to be spontaneous (which is precisely the intent), the planning and preparation begins at least eight months prior to the event. So, eight months ago, there was no way for the organizers to know what conditions would be, whether there would be vaccinations, whether most or many would be vaccinated, and most importantly, what the SB County Health Dept. would allow. Instead of planning for a parade and festival that might be prohibited, the organization spent the last five months imagining an exciting and entertaining alternative. Even if it was assumed at this date that the Health Dept would allow it come June, three months is not enough time to organize it. Considerable fundraising is required to put on the event and those willing to financially support an event that very likely would be prohibited are most certainly few and far between. Let's all support and enjoy what the organization will present to the community and look forward to the return of the full event in the future.

How about a parade that organizes at Pershing Park then goes all along Cabrillo Blvd. and ends at Cabrillo ball park. It would be amazing all along the waterfront. Lots of space and a nice wide street. Fiesta could do the same route. We don't need the Fiesta parade to be hours long. Plus the horses & people in the parade get so hot going up hill. They could have the nice cool air from the ocean. Perfect in my book.

Solstice Parade has always been on State St (Starting w/ the Birthday walk)b with only a couple exceptions. Pulling big floats UP State st in the heat is a killer! ESPECIALLY with the amount of liquor involved! Carmen Mirandas' head dress and band atop, almost broke my back. The big Pink Oven was much better but still heavy. The flat grade of Cabrillo is most enticing, however the June beach fog may be less so.

While I'm personally not a huge fan of the Parades, this would be a great solution. With the Promenade on State Cabrillo makes the most sense for all Parades going forward. I could see this working even if there are still some limited restrictions in place. The optics might not look good, but there really is little to no risk of transmission outdoors in open space.

There is no way to social distance out there to see a parade.
Time will tell after spring break and all the non mask wearers already.
I will stay away from state street on the weekends.

It’s going to be a very difficult time when these lockdown forever / zero-covid proponents realize covid and it’s variants will be endemic. We may never see th again and the our community will be split between people sheltering in their homes the rest of their life with special grocery store hours and zoom school for the kids and the rest of us who already understand there are risks every time we step outside the door but that doesn’t mean we should stop living our lives.

VOR - I hate to disagree with you (haha), but right now FL's numbers are double ours here in CA, with Texas going up too. Opening up everything too soon is concerning, BUT..... no more cancelling outdoor summer events 3-4 months before they take place!

The rules are getting absurd now. Youth sports has reduced the allowed spectators from 4 to 1 per player at the same time we are advertising movie theaters opening up and bars and restaurants operating indoors again. Yet, in 3 months we "know" it will still be too risky to watch a parade outside? Wear a mask, keep your distance and live life now!

CRYSTALANDMAUI - of course you can social distance at a parade. There are no rules stating all parade spectators must be jammed together. Set up spots 6 feet apart along the parade route do not allow people to sit/hangout once the spots are taken up. Sell tickets, do something. Stop throwing our hands up in the air 3 months before an event takes place.

Still hanging on to that “time will tell”?. People have been saying “wait two weeks” in Florida for half year now.

Excellent decision. Stay home. Let everyone else make their own decision. While you're home you can research how much of the virus survives in UV and UVB light.

They could still hold it - Murillo wearing a giant flower headdress, followed by a giant throng of homeless followers dressed as bees coming down state street towards the ocean.

Just where would a traditional parade take place? State Street is closed where parades have been in the past....

The Solstice Workshop would need to open in only about a month from now. That seems difficult.

Great theme! So great, that I am kinda bummed there is no real parade this year to properly appreciate.

We most likely won't be in the yellow tier because we've got restaurants and bars packed outdoors and indoors.

They already cancelled the parade again??? It's 3 months away, how do we know we won't be in Yellow by then? We've got restaurants and bars packed outdoors and indoors up and down State but allowing a parade with distanced spectators in 3 months after most will have been vaccinated is still too risky?
